Pretty miserably cold day. About 0 Fahrenheit.
Driving casually across town during my lunch break. Nothing unusual, until I realized the cloud behind me wasn't snow blowing off the roof.
Pulled a U-turn toward the dealership, and realized the car didn't want to idle. Limped it there. Grey smoke screen from the tailpipe. Noticeable surging.
Smoking seemed somewhat improved on arrival.
From color and smell, I have a sinking suspicion that it was oil. Waiting for them to take a look.

Follow up: They think it's just a sporadic O2 sensor. One can certainly hope.

My catch cans should be near empty, though it's not to say a little bit of something couldn't have frozen up. PCV is a possibility.
Anyways, if I'm to believe the stealership, it might have been bogging rich from a bogus 02 reading. I was leaning toward oil smoke, but maybe it was fuel. Which I'd be happy with that as a result. Of course, they didn't have a sensor in stock, so I'm in a loaner car until Wednesday.

Good luck with this, at least it's not what you initially suspected.

Got my car back today. Upstream O2 sensor replaced under warranty. (These guys seem pretty cool with my "mods", but then I might be in a different boat if it had actually been an engine problem.) Tech commented that the sensor was fouled to a degree that was pretty surprising, but attributed it to how much short-trip driving I do. Car only has 18000 miles on it.

Got a further suggestion that given this evidence that that car spends so much time running below full temp, it might be advisable to get their GDI engine/fuel treatments with oil changes. Can't say I disagree.

I would have to wonder if there's any chance my engine tune factors into any of this, but I'll probably stop reading too much into it. I'm not especially looking forward to replacing the CAT early, with these kinds of warning signs.

No sign of further problems yet. Car may even be a bit peppier, but I might just be telling myself that it *should* be after running rich as a dog.

I went back to stock to ultimately trade in the VT. Man, what a difference my minor mods made. Incredible how much different it is stock vs with the mods.
