I need an engine, my shop found a 2014 but it's nearly $4k with shipping and tax. I keep coming across low mileage 2016s and 2017s for less. The only difference I can see is the Auto to DCT. Can the engine be straight swapped or what?

You want a 15-17 low mileage engine in the car anyway. Transmission does not matter.

That's what I thought, but the dealer and online parts show it doesn't cross reference. I just didn't want the shop coming at me saying it needs hours more labor to install nullifying any savings or even worse saying it's not a direct fit.

One more thing. What's the proper compression pressure? I've only come across the N/A

Compression pressure
Standard : 1225.83kPa (12.5kg/cm², 177.79psi) (200~250 rpm)
Minimum : 1078.73kPa (11.0kg/cm², 156.46psi)
Difference between each cylinder :
98kPa (1.0kg/cm², 14psi) or less
But what about the Turbo?

Around 86% that of the NA 1.6
Will vary some based on ambient air pressure, elevation, heat in the engine, oil weight, mechanical condition, etc.

Do you have Veloster or Veloster turbo? Have you checked Car-part.com or ebay?

I bought a 2016 short block (g4fj) that was originally mated to a DTC transmission. Now it rebuilt/built and mated to my 6sd manual no issue in compatibility. You should be fine as long as it's the same block they will bolt up no problem. I'm not sure about 2017, but for sure the 2016 will fit.
FYI IMPORTANT if you plan on building your motor for power get a 2016. They changed the connecting rods in the 2016 replacing the old ones with a thicker stronger rod. 2016 is on the left.
