ok.. so apparently since it's the thing to do lately I'm thinking about trying my hand at grill fab.. however as with everything else I do... i go big lol and not necessarily the cheapest route..

also as with everything else I do .. I will probably have the option of this being for sale if others like it..

i'm looking at using either

Universal Diamond ABS Plastic Black Mesh Grill 120x40 cm Grid 3x1cm | eBay

ORRR

Universal Honeycomb ABS Plastic Black Mesh Grill 120 x 40 Cm | eBay

right now my biggest concern is the size of the openings letting alot of debris through (or just seeing to much of the FMIC for my taste lol) the holes are .39" by 1.1" and .51" high by 1.1" respectively

.. I'm also thinking of adding a piece of abs plastic behind the middle (where the crash bar is) so that way it looks more oem. I would be doing a license plate relocate to use the stock front toe hook screw to mount the plate holder

anyone have any ideas or thoughts/ concerns

if I did recreate it .. i'd think it'd be around 225 with no license plate relocation.. parts alone will be around 155 (someone said they found the grill for 72 shipped + whichever mesh) so I think thats fair considering the amount of work this will take to do

the reason I'm going for the style I am was because it's still kind of OEM looking but different at the same time.. alot of cars use these styles of mesh :)
I should have the grill mesh tomorrow :)
Yeah, I love the honeycomb mesh, and when the VT first came out, I thought that it would look better with honeycomb rather than what it has, but it's grown on me a lot, and since the opening is so big I'm curious to see as to what it looks like. I think I will look great! But personally I think I would prefer the horizontal.

yea it's more the problem of cost .. if I do it with the horizontal people probably wouldnt like the price(it would be more then what i'm looking at charging for the mesh ones) but thats just because you'd need to buy 2 stock grills then do a decent amount of work to it to make it look good.. so you're looking at almost 200 in parts alone ya know

I've been kicking that around as well.

lol yea i was going to do something a while ago but it was too expensive.. now i'll just pick up a set of stock vents and hack em up and just screw with the extra material lol
oh i will be..... I WILLL BEEEE lol... seriously though.. i'll have enough extra material to do like 4 sets just out of the 1 sheet lol
Then send one my way?!? $10 + shipping?!? =P

haha that doesnt even cover the stock vents.. in reality i'll probably charge around 75-100 and they'll bolt right in. the stock vents are 40 bux i think for the pair
No grills fo u!...no vents! Autotrans FMIC fitment... only focus..tunnel vision!!! :D

Ive been thinking of having a machine shop mill out the small hump bead in the center of the vents to let heat escape...vs. full screened vents...cant believe someone hasnt made em already...HEAT IS KILLER..especially here in AZ

haha autotrans fitment should hopefully be tested next wednesday :) which I should be doing the before dyno that day as well..

yea I'd do that but honestly the amount of work it would take i dont think would actually give a benefit esp for the cost.. the cost wouldnt really change much from what I projected previously because 90% of the work is the same ya know and the grill material is just excess so i'm not really factoring that in lol

Prolly true...I def want some type of heat escape for the hood...especially here.
You can turn the towhook mount problem in to something cool by cutting away the grill at the access point and mounting a racing towhook that has a very short piece of tow strap between the chassis mount and the towhook. That way you don't have to engineer the removeable patch piece of the stock grille and you don't have to worry about a fixed towhook damaging the subframe if you get in to an accident.

To me the mesh grille seems like a good idea but visually it is missing that bumper strip and it is just too much of one texture over such a large area.

I dunno, maybe a skirt or some trapezoidal pieces on the bottom would break it up a bit. My preference would be for a significantly oversized Hyundai logo in the center of the grille like 80's Mercedes or DTM cars.

Lipstick might look good as well to define the grille and make it look more like a race car. The new Aston Martin race cars I saw over the weekend used lipstick for a good effect.
