I've been waiting a couple months now for a MT VT with the ultimate package to show up in Washington, but have had no luck. I've spoken with a dealer down in California, and he has an Iron Man Silver MT VT with the ultimate package being delivered sometime soon. If I was to fly down to get the car, and then drive it back up to Seattle, would it be bad to drive so many miles within the first couple days of the cars life? I understand that I'd want to avoid cruise control, and vary my speed and rpms a little, but this is my first time buying a brand new car, so I'm not sure if driving it so much will be harmful.

As long as you keep the revs under red zone and you change the load very frequent (not keeping same speed over long period of times) you should be fine.

Also, I would not recommend a 10 hrs straight trip. The more frequent you stop, on this case, the better. The internal parts in the engine are still new, so driving for hours and hours without stopping may affect the break-in.

That's what I thought. If I do try to make the trip, I'd probably stop every hour or so for 10-15min to let it rest.

so, why does he need a 1k oil change?

and what is the big deal about cruise control for the first few thousand miles.

i only ask 'cause i didn't do either and i haven't seen any problems.

It shouldn't be any problem at all as long as you vary your speed. Say that you're on the highway cruising at 60 mph (or whatever), check for cops first, then run it up to 70 or 75 and then let off the gas til it drops back down to 55 or 60 then resume cruising. Do that every five minuts or so so that you're not running at a steady 60 mph for hours. And that is the problem with cruise control. It will leave you running pretty much at one constant RPM. You need to vary the RPMs. Of course city driving will vary your RPMs just by the nature of stop and go traffic, so no worries there.

I only wish I could have taken an 1100 mile trip when my car was new. The more miles the looser the motor gets and runs better. The motor doesn't need to rest.

You will be fine if you just follow the owner's manual recommendations for the first 600 miles - keep the revs low, don't use full throttle (much!) and don't run at constant RPMs (no cruise control). The ECU controls the break-in period too and keeps you from doing anything too damaging.

The common thinking is that you need to change your oil well before the first 3,750 mile interval. Your first batch of oil will get sludgey after 1,000 miles and your VT will drive better after the first oil change. What is not clear is whether or not Hyundai designed the first batch of oil to last 3,750 miles as part of the normal break-in routine.

Are you sure it wouldn't be cheaper to have your new VT shipped to you?

Turn the opportunity into a nice road trip. Ive heard the Pacific Coast highway is beautiful. Vary your speed and it should be all good. Besides, some people think that skipping the easy break-in and driving like you stole it is better anyway.

I agree I've been redlining mine since 7 miles lol. The way I see is if you were to track your car would.. you "break it in" before hand? lol I think that's a myth by now or it applied to cars back from the 90s.

Unless your car was a special order and trucked to the dealership and held for you with 2 miles on it, I was probably test driven pretty hard. I test drove a couple automatics and had it full throttle through the gears. The salesmen never said not to drive so hard on a new motor, so you never know what's going on with your car before you get it and baby it. I took mine up to 5k rpm a handful of times in the first 600. I'd like to hear from somebody who kept rpm under 3k for the first 600 and compare their MPG to that of someone who's been redlining from day 1. That could answer your question.

I know it'll still cost a bit to fly down and drive up myself, but I had assumed it would take around $1,000 to have it shipped. Plus it sounds like a nice little trip to fly down and get some quality driving time. I have a friend in LA that I can stay with as well. The only other money issue I forgot to consider and need to figure out is if sales tax in California. I know I'll have to pay the washington tax with whatever I do once I get it licensed, but I need to figure out if I'll have to pay the California sales tax as well.

The car in thinking about buying hasn't even been delivered to the dealership yet. The guy I spoke to just said that it was being delivered soon and asked if I wanted them to hold it. I said no then, but am going to call him tomorrow and tell him to hold if after I find out some details with my loan + buying out of state, and the tax issues.

Thanks everyone for the tips. Good to know that it wont be harmful as long as I drive it right, or that it could even be good for the car to break it in on a long trip.

If dealers do it right they will base sale of your home states tax and file everything with dmv. They usually use titling company. I bought my car in West Virginia and i live in New York they took care of all plates, taxes and registration.. Recieved in mail few weeks later..

Thanks for the help everyone, but it looks like this thread wasn't even needed. The guy at the dealership I was talking to isn't returning my calls or emails, so looks like this lead was a dud. Think I'm just going to have to settle for the base model and buy locally. No panoramic sunroof for me :( ...at least I'll save a little bit of $.
