Balance Weights

1926 Views 10 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  MyDianaZ06
Tonight coming home I heard an odd noise from the back end passenger side. I've heard this noise before, but thought i ran over a pickerball or something. I decided to take a closer look this time and also check the tire pressure, and found the weights are coming off. What is a good way of keeping these little suckers on?

haha what shop do you get your tires balanced at?

best way to keep sticky weights on is to properly clean the area where you are going to apply a sticky weight. whoever balanced that wheels, or all you wheels, was lazy. I always buff the area with a wire brush and wipe it down with a clean rag. and you have to make sure where it is asking for weights to take all dirt debris or sticky residue from a previous sticky weight completely off. but it is in your best interest to go back wherever you got your wheels balanced last and have then rebalance that tire.
I just had the same thing happen on my wife's Pathfinder. I pulled it out of the garage last night to get to my tools and then back into my garage for the night. When I went out to take pics of the vents this morning I notice 2.5oz of weights on the driveway. This is a recurring problem with the Pathfinder though. Luckily it was in for service today anyway, so I just called up the service advisor and had him balance all the wheel. So if there is a trick to keeping them on I'd like to know also.

I suspected that they weren't cleaning the area very well because the sticky on the weights was dirty, but I couldn't be sure it didn't happen after the weight fell off.
This is the third time it has happened since we bought it in 2006. I've never had a car throw weights like this.
there is no trick.

I can tell this forum all day how to do it. but unless you actually balance wheels it is pointless unfortunately :(

what you can do, before you go and take it on to get balanced, is take the wheels off, take all the sticky weights, dirt and debris off and clean the barrel of the rim where they usually apply the sticky weights with soap and water. then take it in and hope they at least wipe it down with a clean rag.

at costco, or at least my shop, it is critical we balance tires properly so members don't come back. or wonder why their weights are falling off. and we have all the training and patience to make sure that a wheel is properly balanced and all the weights are secure. it is our job. where as other shops, they don't care. they just want the car in and out as fast as they can. plus they don't have the experience like we do. plus they probably don't even balance as good as we do :D
On small aircraft wheels I always wipe a little clear RTV around the weight. This not only helps in sealing out moisture but keeping the weight on as well.

i can't really complain because I know they will make it right at no charge. I'll let them know to clean the surface well before re-balancing all the tires. This was done only 300 miles ago so I know the rest are going to go flying off. I kinda wonder what damage a 2.5 oz weight could do if it hit a person, windshield or car doing about 25 around a corner.
...Update:
Tomorrow at 9:00am they will re-balance all tires
SWEET.

Good thing they are doing it and not charging you. It cost next to nothing for material to balance a tire. If anybody charges you it should be for labor only. And depending how well the tech is on a well calibrated balancer is, it should take 20 minutes tops from first wheel to last wheels. 30 minutes start to finish.

BTW you asked

It can be bad if it hit something going fast enough. I always wondered that to. It'll be some "Final destination" type of stuff lol

All fixed with apologies. The 2 back wheels lost a few weights, the fronts were fine. Now if I had a connection with COSTCO and their Batteries. Seems we had a small explosion with a AA battery that took out a calculator.
