Borla Exhaust Coming Soon

35397 Views 199 Replies 55 Participants Last post by  bgenlvtex
I just dropped my car off at the Borla facilities in Oxnard where they will use my car in the R&D process for either a full catback or axle back set up. I'm working with Alvin T. and he seemed very interested to know the type of tone veloster turbo owners would like to hear?

For starters, I mentioned that VT owners would like the exhaust note to be different from the V. As it is currently, both sound identical. Additionally, some owners would like to have some interior cabin noise from the exhaust - nothing droning.

The R&D process is 2+ weeks, I will be in touch with borla every couple days for any updates.

WoW! Great news, sounds very exciting :D. Can't wait to hear more about this here project.
My 2 cents about the noise would be a nice throaty rumble but nothing that would resemble old us muscle cars or anything like that. I have ALWAYS enjoyed the Subaru boxer sound on the sti's and wrx's. And PLEASE, PLEEEASE no tin can/rice sounds like on some of those Honda's that I've seen!! Thx ;).
I'll pass your input along! I agree no rice rocket exhaust.
Thanks for the input. I'll mention these suggestions to Borla: 1) throaty, slightly raspy tone 2) preferably catback 3) 2.75'' piping or >...
suggestions sent to borla. awaiting feed back or input from them.
They actually had a ford focus st at the facility. It was loaned by ford to allow them to develop a system before it hit the sales lot. The car looked pretty sweet. I want to see how it turns out and compare it to the milltek.
here are some quick responses from Alvin T. - Borla R&D Project Manager:

Axel back vs cat-back: There are many considerations when offering a cat-back verses just a rear section. Cost is most important consideration as more material costs more money. The stock exhaust has a welded cat and offering a cat-back would require cutting the pipe. In our experience many customers are opposed to cutting the factory exhaust – this is where a rear-section is most popular.

Larger Piping: How many companies offer a performance tune and what claims do they make? You can post this question in the forum to see who’s considering the high-performance route. As stated on your Borla tour, we can offer just about any exhaust product but a 2.75” pipe just makes no sense unless you’re making a race-car with 600hp. Ask the guys what pipe Rhys Millen uses on his Drift Veloster…?

Feel free to chime in - I can forward any questions and comments. He's been very helpful and is opening to hearing VT owner input.

I didn't realize Rhys Millen developed a drift veloster until now. Good stuff.

I am trying to verify the approach they are going to take with the exhaust system. I'll keep everyone posted as I get more info.
Hey guys - I got a few responses back from Alvin:

"cat has flange behind it. Creating a cat-back is possible but cost near double a rear-section.
We could offer a mid-pipe but it won’t happen for (3) reasons:
1. Costs to build & inventory separate mid-pipe.
2.*Flanges aren’t cheap and offering separate mid-pipe & rear section requires 3-flanges.
3.*Most customers looking for performance + sound would not consider the rear-section."

It looks like it's a business decision as well. Most people who own a VT probably wouldn't want to spend $1700 on a exhaust system. It totally makes sense.

Any comments on keeping factory tips? He's asking if we are happy with the stock appearance. Any suggestions on how it should look?
It looks like the consensus is to keep the stock tips. I'll wait until tomorrow morning to reply back. I can't really think of a better solution than to use the stock tips. It fits in so well. Unless borla decides to use rolled polished tips as a direct replacement.
sent the response to keep the stock tips unless they have a suggestion for tips utilizing the stock valance/diffuser. Additionally, i'm asking if they can provide a dyno graph of before and after.
I'll see if I can get any updates on this exhaust. Ill relay info whenever I hear from them.
Update

Alvin from Borla called to give me an update. Here are a few points that stuck out:
- the system will no longer be a rear section setup, it will be a full cat-back. He mentioned that since cost was a concern to most people, they will build it with that in mind. Only a full cat-back will be offered.
- cat-back will be preliminary development using 2.5'' piping.
- cabin drone will be handled by their patented tool/techniques.
- dynographs will be provide; however, it is recommended that each owner should run their own dynos. He mentioned that there will always be debates on the results as conditions will vary.
- distributors will handle group buy. He will try to locate some for this group. If anyone knows a distributor that is willing to do a group buy, please chime in.

More info to come next week.

Also to add - stock tips will be maintained to keep costs down.
full catback will probably run about 600$-700$+.. I don't think there is anything bolt-on available right now..

for the exhaust systems, expect the pricing to be the same or close to the NA V as the systems are quite close in design.. material cost on their end will be near identical for both vehicles..

The stock system uses 2.5" Stainless steel piping already so if you go to an exhaust shop, remove the muffler and replace the resonator with a muffler you should get VERY similar performance results to any of the catback systems that will become available at a fraction of the cost.

Turbo exhaust is all about freeing the system up as best you can (which their muffler will do)

Simply replacing the resonator with a Magnaflow or similar and removing the muffler will do the same thing.

When I finally get my muffler and get it installed (resonator only is a bit loud) I will be at about 380$ for the entire setup with very little restriction.
Benefits of not going custom - from Borla:

-It won’t be the same grade material.
-The system won’t look as clean and the bends are mandrel bent.
-It’s typically a one-shot deal meaning there’s no sound tuning.
-No million-mile-warranty.
-Rust.
-Stock system is NOT 2.50” pipe. You'll get the 2.50 with the Borla setup.
Thanks for the rebuttal. It's good for people to know custom vs direct bolt on. In the end it's all preference.
I should have an update by the end of the week. Hopefully with pics and video.
VIDEO IS UP ON YOUTUBE! Let me know your guys' feedback. This is the first iteration of the prototype. I was informed the next version will be slightly toned down. My car will be kept for another week to get the final tune completed. The clip gives a good ballpark of how it will sound like.

Here's the clip: Borla R&D 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo PN-140506 (Available OCT'12) - YouTube

This product should be available sometime in October.
Why are they going to tone it down
I think r&d can tone it do their liking. They also use their best judgement to see what's best. They said it wouldn't be much of a tone down.
I just spoke to Borla. The video does not provide a true representation of the actual sound of the product. He says its much louder and more noticeable. He will provide pics of the undercarriage next week.
Updated Video - Production Version

The video contains new system with shots of the system and dyno results:
