Guys, maybe u all went through this question, but couldn't find it. I just got me Elite White ultimate VT (yeah boy), and looking to lower my car. I was wondering if coil overs were any difference from Koni Adjustable struts with some lowering springs. I also would like to know if u all know what spring has the least drop since I would get the adjustable struts. Thanks guys. Will soon post pics of My Elite!!

I'll give this one a go---the quality/valving of the Koni struts is going to be much better/more precise than all the coilovers currently available for the car---however the Koni struts are just that and don't have many of the benefits of the coilovers like rideheight adjustability, camber/caster plates, spring preload etc...I sell the Koni's and I know the front installation requires removing the front struts and then cutting the oem cartridge from the housing and drilling/mounting the new cartridge in- which isn't a major deal for most shops, but more difficult for the do it yourself guys. The coilovers more or less just bolt in---you set rideheight where you want it and then get the front aligned. Post up some pics or your new ride!!!

If you didn't care about the ability to adjust ride height and wanted an overall good package that was dependable, would you suggest the Koni's or the coilovers? In other words, which product out right now is the overall best performing on street/track?

A hijack of sorts... but it may help as well :)

Koni "yellow" models are typically damping adjustable and offer about a 1"+/- height adjustment. Thats is if they are the typical yellow models. If they are inserts like Pierce suggested, no height adjustment.

When I had my Hondas back in the day, I ran Konis exclusively. Their warranty and customer support were top notch. The also offered custom built ones too. Koni doesnt mess around and if they offered a kit for the VT, Id chose those over some made in Taiwan coilover anyday. Bilstein would be another one to look for.

what of i want the ride quality of koni but want to he able to adjust my height and dampening for different situations? but for the most part just want my ride slammed? but still want a quality smooth ride?
You wouldn't be able to get "slammed" with the koni's because the bodies/shaft travel are built to the oem lengths---so even if you put a coilover kit on he Koni/oem strut cartridge, you'd run out of shaft travel and bottom the strut/shock out (which is common). The coilovers have the ride height separately adjustable from the shock/strut travel so you could literally put it on the ground and still have up/comp travel left---even though the tire may not...if you want it slammed and want a softer ride then you can experiment with different spring rates on a set of coilovers...I've got some pretty good rates/data saved over the years and may be able to get you pretty close...

so when I'm ready for coilovers you can try to hook me up with a set of coilovers (ksport I assume) with what I want (or closes to)??

is that spring and valve/cartridge adjustment too?

An option would be HSD which are Widely used for Street application and are very smooth. in the Hyundai Community..These kits are not ment to be slammed but with give you the look you want to the height of your tire or have it slightly Tucked!

All depends on your Budget but IMO pricing for NEW struts and Lowering springs brings you close to a Coilover PRICE TAG!!!:p

Does Ground Control still make custom coilovers?
Not reliably, we gave up on their "custom" stuff years ago. I spoke with Bilistein last week asking about a set they made for a SEMA car and they said it was a one off deal and had no intentions of making anything for the Veloster anytime soon. I guess I can just custom make a set of Koni coilovers for folks if the normal road/available units aren't good enough...We've made ton's on stuff over the years using everything from the koni Red entry level inserts to their double adjustable race stuff...

If you do happen to make some custom coilovers let me know I'd be highly interested, as I'm going for a slammed look as well. I'm also in California so I'd be able to pick up.

Will do---I'm pulling my Ksports off today and trying some other spring rates---I'll have a look and see if I can't get motivated...If the Koni's where in stock it would be an easier decision...

So I'm new to car tuning in general, but I have been absorbing and learning a lot the past few months.

This is my daily driver so I was thinking of installing Koni and Eibach springs. You mention cutting out the cartridge? Would this make it difficult to install anything but koni in the future?

I've also heard coilovers can be more difficult to maintain in the future. What truth is there to that?

It just means that you need a semi-generic insert. Koni produces an insert that is the same size as ours, but not the same mounting points. You could switch to different insert, that is also the same size... or a direct fit. So no, your not locked into anything.

I'm not sure I understand the question... In the future will will have Mr Fusion's providing power and anti-gravity generators replacing the suspension so I'm not sure what difficulty you would be having...

I have always used shocks/springs combinations myself on past cars. However, there are cases where cheap coilovers can leak and such. Though, most reputable brands shouldn't have this issue. I'd search on various other car forums that use the same vendor for other kits to see if you can find instances of them going bad.

Thanks for the reassurance.

For the coilovers, I'm referring to maintenance? Cleaning because of buildup over time causing issues ... just stuff I've heard around, but have never asked for a real answer before.

With the Koni's you'll cut up your stock strut housing's and mount the cartridge inside---you'd be able to buy another complete strut or coilovers and replace the new koni's anytime you like---the maintenance for the coilovers is not much at all---just an occasional cleaning---even with a hose is sufficient usually. We just took ours off after a couple of months and they were practically brand new looking/required very little cleanup...
