I've been searching for a thread that covered painting the inserts black on the stock VT wheels, but couldn't find one. For those interested, here how it looks. I like the chrome inserts, but found that I liked the wheels better when the chrome picked up a dark reflection. I've always liked the tech wheels with black inserts...I know this is a little different, but I'm pretty happy with the results.

Thanks., I guess it took about 3 hours. I was only able to take one wheel off at a time. And, I put each one back together as soon as I could handle the inserts...carefully. Very easy to do.

I like! This may be something to do to our Black VT to make it "just a little bit different" than the rest. :) How many coats did you use and what product did you use? I haven't take a wheel off to see how the inserts are attached, so I'm curious... is it done by screws clips or what? Again... it looks great and really goes well w/ the silver paint and black plastic accents throughout the car's design.

I used one can of plasti-dip black, and was able to get 3 to 4 coats. The inserts each have 3 small Phillips head screws holding them on. The center section just pops out by pushing from the back. I sorry now that I didn't take pictures of the process.

Thanks, bud! Sounds easy and inexpensive enough!

Looks good. I was think of doing it too. Ive never worked with PD before. Does it require and prep or a clearcoat?
From my experience I did not need a clear coat, unless you like that gloss look better of course, but the normal PD is pretty sturdy-ish ;).
Prep that I did was just to clean the area with a simple green and water mix, then alcohol wipe to get rid of any and all contaminants that may still be there like grease, etc.
However, if you're prepping a painted surface, I do not think alcohol is the way to go bc you could possibly damage the oem paint. ~my 2 cents~

You should not have a problem using alcohol to prep for Plasti-Dip.

Laquer Thinner or Acetone would likely damage the factory finish.
I haven't tried either and wouldn't recommend them.

But I used alcohol to prep the Hyundai Logos, and the chrome grill and surround on my NAV, as well as my previous Toyota Tacoma with no issues.

I just made sure to wax the area when I was done since I'm sure the Plasti-Dip took the wax off.

I was thinking of doing the same thing to my VT, only using White Plasti-Dip.

If only my VT would show up...
Been 5 weeks already...
Just got an email saying it may be another 5 weeks or more...
No White Ultimates with 6 speed Manuals anywhere near Chicago...?

I simply used alcohol to prep the parts before applying the PD. I started this as an experiment to see how I liked it, that's why I used the PD as it would be easily removed if it turned out bad or I didn't like the look. I bought a can of the glossifier, but kind of liked the flat look better. If I have any durability issues, I'll likely remove the PD and prep the inserts with light sandpaper and apply something like duplicolor. Time will tell....

I used a Carbon fiber vinyl wrap on mine and on the matte gray bars on the front and sides. I expected it to take only 2 hours----Then 8 hours later i was completed. It looks really really nice, you should check it or give it a try. The vinyl wrap that is like 10 bucks at auto zone works rather well.

Haven't had much luck with the vinyl wrap....pretty tough. Post some pictures of what you did, we're all looking for ideas.
