it is OK.. it was designed that way.

It actually helps keep some of that heat away from other components. Could also be looked at is less heat in the top of the engine with it off though since it can dissipate.

I have had mine off since day 2.

it will help the engine from getting dirty and it will help keep water and stuff out of the coil pack area. It is actually a pretty heavy duty piece.. plastic and then the underside is heavy foam.

I like to keep them on, keeps the engine bay looking nice, neat, & tidy looking.
You can actually paint it to your style ... I am planning to paint it with a "V" Blue and the sides white this weekend

...someone else has done it bright orange to match it completely with Orange car color.

Yeah I popped mine off today to see what was under it, It seams like it holds in a lot of the heat, which might be bad since the intake plenum is right there in the front. You can definitely hear a lot more engine chatter and clicking with this piece off. .

Engine cover muffles engine noise

I think you've hit the nail on the head. I believe the engine cover is simply to dampen the engine noise, thus making the car
a quieter ride. For those of you who like lots of noise, IMHO I think it's fine to remove it permanently.

The engine cover does a couple things. It helps the engine get up to running temperature more quickly. Once the engine is up to running temperature the cooling system is more than sufficient to maintain optimal running temperature. The main thing it does is dampen the loud and unpleasant sound of the GDI fuel injectors. GDI engines lack traditional roaring sounds that consumers have come to associate with performance engines and replace that sound with noisy and clackety injector sounds.

I wouldn't mess with it.

Any pics of this paint job yet? I'm curious. ;)
