There is a way to do both. The instrument panel should be on your left at the bottom part of the dash. If you go into settings on the screen there is an option for brightness. But to be honest when I adjusted mine it didn't make that much of a difference.

There is a night setting for the GPS screen, as well as a brightness setting for the screen itself. If you put the screen setting to auto, it will dim automatically at night or darker places, like under an over pass or inside a garage.

Mine barely changes. Overly bright at night for my tastes.
Click on the Info/Setup button on the right side under your GPS screen, then click on Display. There you can choos Automatic, Day, or Night. When I choose Night, mine gets substantially more dark, but the
automatic setting doesn't change that much. Unless it becomes more effective, I'll be using the Night setting at night.

the brightness adjustments on this unit SUCK. the backlighting is horrible.. By making it brighter, all it does is wash the whole screen out..

I've had no problem with my GPS screen being washed out when in daylight mode, but I'm still fooling around with the automatic brightness selection becasue it doesn't seem to adjust to darker at night. You may need to take yours in for a service check. I also recommend you check out my post on Fiamm Horns. Makes a heckuva difference when getting someone's attention. (scares the heck outta them)

Anyone know a quick way of turning off the display? I, too find it too bright sometimes at night, and it appears you have to go Settings > Display > Off... Drove an Acura once that had a voice command "Turn display off" which I was hoping the VT had...

Just picked mine up tonight, and have notice this also. Although I can't find an option for day, night or auto, there is just low mid high for brightness. I have it on low and it is still too bright for my liking. Button on the bottom left just off the screen though turns the screen off for me so I'm happy enough with that :)

The day, night or auto is for the GPS map, not the brightness of the screen. Look under the setup for the GPS, you should find it there. I think!!! Don't have the manual with me here...

The instrument panel is lower left from steering wheel

The screen is under
Settings
Display
Brightness (day, night, and auto)
For the auto........if you turn any lights on it automatically goes to night mode.

The American and Australian GPS headunit system is COMPLETELY different. Very frustrating as we in Aus miss out on a lot of features.
Yes but at least we a button on the left of the console which has a little crescent moon on it which turns the display completely off and is very useful if doing long night drives without the need for it to be on.
It seems the USA one doesn't have that.
