Okay so I have had this new car only 500 miles. I am basically seeing if anyone else is having this same issue so if not I will take the car in and get it looked over. If even SLIGHTLY moving forwards or even backwards and I fully engage the clutch, when I put the stick into reverse it grinds as if I am not pushing in the clutch or something. I have had my close friends do the same thing to eliminate possible error on my part. Is the car just set up to be sensitive because in my opinion, the car should never grind any gear when fully engaging the clutch.

Thanks, Keith_Stone

It only does it when rolling forward or backward.. even if it is very slight movement.. At a dead stop it goes smoothly into gear.. My past MT cars did not do that so I was just a bit confused and would assume that someone in the forum would have put into reverse and re-enacted the same exact thing at some point in time lol

Reverse is not synchronized so it can/will grind if you are rolling - especially forward. Every MT car that I've owned does this.
This.
My other Mt cars have been a bit more forgiving on this issue(accord / acura cl-s/ g35) but it just seems this one is very sensitive, can't really toss it into reverse as your slightly moving. I've only had mine for about 500 miles and maybe it's still a bit notchy + I've always used red line. tranny oil in my other cars. So maybe those two might play a part in making it a bit more fluid.

Agree, on my 93 accord I can roll a little and as long as I got my clutch fully engaged (clutch pedal to the floor) I can put it in reverse with no grinding. That would suck if this one does that. sometimes if I am on a hilly parking lot and I press the clutch I'll just throw it in gear and take off.

Keth_Stone, does this ONLY happen if you are throwing it in reverse or does it do that with 1rst as well??

Also, I was told that reverse was just first gear.

Some luxury cars do have a synchro reverse but it is rare - none of my BMW's had a synchro reverse.

Several of my BMW 2002's had blown synchros in 2nd and 3rd and you had to match revs to shift them. A lot of old-school race cars had no synchros at all and you had to match revs every time to shift them. Those are known as crash boxes.

You can shift the VT without using the clutch at all if you know what you are doing.

If you want to shift in to reverse while you are rolling forward you can double clutch which will usually get the layshaft spinning backwards so it won't grind. You can hear when that happens if you listen closely. You can also feather the clutch a little so the reverse gear is spinning the proper direction before engaging reverse - and you can hear that too.

good ol power shiftin eh... boy did i mess clutch up with that. I doubt any of my cars had reverse synchros either, but this clutch is very peculiar, it's buttery smooth except going into reverse, almost feels like a blown synchro i had in my G from 2 to 3rd. u had to pop it back into neutral, match revs and pop the clutch in. fun times lol
