Hi, I bought my 2013 VT three months ago and have recently noticed a new issue that has popped up in the last few weeks: my headlights randomly turn off while I’m driving. Sometimes it’s a flash, sometimes they stay off for about 2-3 seconds. Sometimes the dash lights flicker, or turn off with the headlights, and sometimes they stay on. Sometimes they turn off when I use my turn signal, sometimes it’s random. What should be my first checks? Fuses? Thanks in advance!

V and load test the battery. Be sure all battery connections, plug connections, grounds, and fuses are good and clean if needed.

I’m not sure on the battery age, I bought her as is.. the grounds look fine! I’m thinking maybe the headlight switch is worn out?
Just looking at the grounds means nothing.
Hyundai grounds are attached to the painted surface and only use the bolt holding the connection to the body.
Remove the ground connector from the body and scrape away the paint to bare metal so the ground connector can actually do its job.
This is what we are referring to when we state check the grounds.
Any rust on the bolt will make the ground weak causing issues.
Even if it doesn't solve any problems your car will run better and more efficiently electrically. 👍

I will re-check tomorrow morning, checking for rust this time. Thank you!

So I am able to reproduce the issue! I think it’s the signal indicator lever. When I turn the lights on, if I go slow and kinda hold it between the modes, the lights flicker like a rave.
Sounds like a party to me. 😂😉
Contacts on the mechanism could be going bad.
You going to repair yourself or have a shop look into it?

I’m thinking of taking her apart in my garage 😬
Here's a little information on the stalk assembly, how it works, and the connections.
Hope it helps.
Steering wheel has to be removed and the clock spring. Let me know if you need that information and I'll look it up for ya.

Hello,my wife is having the same issue on her 2015. Was curious if you resolved the issue?
Hi there! I haven’t solved the issue yet, as I haven’t had the time to take apart the steering wheel yet. I’ve talked to other Hyundai/KDM owners and it seems to be a fairly common issue. Essentially what I’ll be doing when I have the time, is disconnecting the battery and taking the steering wheel off. There’s a plug to disconnect the air bag too. I found a video on YouTube on how to remove it safely. Someone shared a diagram in a previous comment ^^^ my plan is to just visualize everything and see what’s going on. If nothing stands out to me, I’ll be taking it to a shop. I will definitely be updating here when I take her apart!

Oh ok. Yea I totally understand. I might do the same, take it apart and check it out, also thinking of going ahead and replacing the switch while I'm in there. Since it's not a very expensive piece. I know it's crazy how it goes on her car it happened a few times a couple of years ago and then it stopped and just started doing it again yesterday. I could never get it to do it with me driving or messing with it. Thanks for responding.

Hey there! Did you ever fix the issue? Mine is doing the same thing and I am suspecting the headlight switch. Mine does it when I first turn them on intermittantly. After I pull the high beam toggle and or turn it on and off it stops. What did you end up doing? Thx!

a little late but I have the same problem in my 2016 vt. the problem stems from the turn signal if you turn it too hard or hit it too hard for a turn It can cause your lights to flicker.
It's the switch. You can either replace the left side switch if available and there about 39.00-49.00 dollars brand new, or buy both sides together if the left isn't available by itself. The complete assembly is a lot more so try to find just the left side. The other option is to remove it and see if you can fix it. I believe the contact point arms internally pull away so it loses continuity. Just bend them back out and put it back together. It disassembles easily once the arm is removed. Get a new one if possible and be done with it. Taking the arm out is very simple this guy explains it
. It only took me 20 mins to replace. It's not a well made design like many other parts on our Velosters.
