HID upgrade for VT with H11B Bulbs

I could not find any specific info for upgrading the lights that have H11B bulbs so I thought I'd bang out one. Sorry if someone beat me to it and I missed it.

First of all do not order the relay harness, it's easier to install without it and you don't need it (unless you like the idea of tying directly to the battery).

I bought the bulbs, the ballast units and drilled dust caps. (you can drill the factory ones with a 1" hole if you don't want to buy drilled ones).

Remove your bumper. You might be able to do this without removing the bumper but wow is it a lot easier if you do. The power to the H11B bulbs is attached to the socket and you need to remove the wire harness from the socket to tie into. Trust me, I'm a mechanical idiot and I got the bumper off and on no problem, do a search, there are good threads that I followed on here.

Remove the 3 bolts holding the whole headlight, unplug the main wire harness and remove the dust cap. Remove the bulb. EDIT - In the picture you can see 3 screws on the socket. Remove the bulb then remove the 3 screws then you can take the wire harness of without breaking it!!! ENDEDIT Remove the wire harness (black and yellow wire with a small plastic tip) that is attached to the light bulb socket. Now there might be a way to remove the factory wire harness without cracking the mount - I managed to crack both of them - no big deal but you cannot go back to H11B bulbs if this happens...

This shows the factory harness detached from the bulb socket.

Wire Tree Plant

Thread the bulb though the dust cap and align the rubber gasket in the hole.

Auto part Wire Automotive lighting Technology Helmet

Attach the power lines from the light bulb to the factory power harness - red to yellow, black to black

Insert the bulb into the socket, lock in, feed in the wires then screw in the dust cap.

Re-install the light with the 3 screws, remember to re-attach the main wire harness

Gun Wire Technology Firearm Cable

Attach the ballast unit to the bulb wires.

Dual tape down the ballast unit.

Make sure everything works then re-attach you bumper and you're good to go. Took me about 90 minutes.

Useful to point out you got the CAN-BUS option. The relay is needed if you don't go this route based on what others have experienced.
How much did the kit cost you and where did you pick it up at? I'm not wiring guru, so I'm curious as to if this was a pretty simply job.
Based off of his previous threads, they're DD Hylux ballasts. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Purchased at Diode Dynamics - they are:

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Low Beam HID Conversion Kit
Ballasts - Premium HYLUX CAN-BUS Slim Digital
HID Relay - Include with order! (NOT NEEDED)
Pre-drilled OEM Dust Caps - Include with order!
Color/Temperature - 8000K

Total price $179.99 plus shipping.

This was plug and play. Once you unhook the wire harness from the factory bulb socket, you plug some wires into that, plug the rest into the ballast and that was it. The trickiest part was getting the bumper off, that was easy and I'm not mechanically inclined at all, I just followed a post on this forum.

Here is a pic - dims only:

Dims & Highs (Sylvania ZXE's):

And I grabbed some LED's from the same place for the vanity/map lights:

And trunk lights:

I'll try and get some good night shots tonight.

Cheers!

My last two cars had HID's and the headlights look like the projectors on the VT - i.e. like a round ball of glass that the bulb sits behind. In fact I thought I was getting HID's until my first night ride - wow the disappointment when that sickly yellow halogen light splashed the road in front of me. Anyway what I'm saying is that the HID upgrade looks nice and stock like with the projector lamps.

You can't see in the pictures but they really do look like any other car with HID's. When you put HID bulbs in a non-projector type housing - like a direct lamp or one with a reflector in front of the bulb - things start looking kind of funky. Sadly that means the my brights will remain non-HID (unless I can be convinced by someone else with a positive solution). Right now they are Sylvania ZXE's and while they were an improvement over the factory halogens, you can see in the snap below of low/high they still look kind of yellow beside the HID's. Does anyone know a good bulb the will look better than the Sylvania ZXE?

If you have a VT with the projector style headlights I highly suggest the upgrade. It looks BAD ASS and you see so much more at night. I didn't realize how used to HID's I had gotten with my last 2 vehicles, not only was I disappointed in the halogens I was appalled at how much less they light things up!

The lights at night - I wish you could see how good these look with the LED line under and circle around. I can't say enough about how great they look.

Lows Only - this is my road - no streetlights - you just see so much more and the light is so much better

Lows & Highs - as mentioned I upgraded my Highs to ZXE's. The Sylvania's look white next to plain halogens, but next to real HID's they still have a yellow tint!

And a quick boo inside. The map lights have been switched with LED's it's amazing how much more the cabin is lit up! And it's a nice white light.

I also did the trunk LED - wow it sure lights up everything back there a lot better than that single incandescent bulb. Diode Dynamics, I'm extremely happy with everything (although it took a bit of fabricating to get the trunk LED to work).

Cheers!

p.s. To reiterate, if you have projector style low's save your pennies and do this!

Did you have any problems with the aiming of the lowbeam headlights? I put 8000k's in them and the beam looks way off.

None. I did not even have to adjust them. I just put the bulbs in and re-mounted the whole enclosure. Lucky I guess...
looks very nice. shouldn't 8000k look really BLUE? these pictures look white
To your point about removing the bulb socket without breaking it. You can remove the bulb holder (see picture 1) by taking those 3 screws out and them remove the bulb socket without breaking anything. The bracket then reattaches with those 3 screws and you can make your connections much more easily. And if you ever want to go back stock, just reverse it. It's incredibly easy, takes an extra 2 mins and keeps you from breaking anything.

Camera/phone probably adjusted the white levels and it came out white. I'd imagine its much bluer in person.
just placed an order for the same kit, only using 6000k bulbs. I had those on my fusion and was plenty of white for me. Thanks for this write up, possibly may be ordering an Injen SRI as well since the bumper will be off ! ;)

Thanks
Phil

Thank you for that! Anyone doing this upgrade in the future please make note! I already bought a backup set of HID bulbs since I'm pretty much stuck with them now.

Cheers

It's slightly blue yes.

I wish my Injen kit was in when I had the bumper off. I was going to skip the SRI and just go CAI because I was worried about the bumper. Oh well now I only need decide if I want to go through the trouble again.

I went ahead actually ordered the AEM CAI after pondering between AEM/Injen/Turbosocks CAI solutions. Will put up some pics when it's all said and done.

Thanks

Thanks man, I ordered my kit yesterday. Can't wait!

Enjoy the install! Throw up some pics when you are done. Good luck!
sideshowstanley, how did you get your HID bulb to "lock into the socket"? The kit I ordered just has a foam bottom. No grooves for me to lock it into the socket. The bulb isn't level, because it won't stay in and now the headlights are super dim because they mostly point down. Did I miss something?
Must be peculiar to your kit?!?! The foam piece on my bulbs were just protection for shipping. It came off and there were 3 triangular tabs on the bulb that line up with the 3 holes in the socket, one click to the right and it's locked in place.
