So I purchased from a guy in ***** and as much as I don't blame him he did sell me a cracked spoiler...I took it to a few shops around my area and they basically laughed at my face saying that 1.the spoiler would cost more to fix than what is worth and 2. Fiberglass in general is a shitty material and I should stay away from it. I am obviously going to be requesting a refund and I am really pondering if getting another one is even worth it ...so is Fiberglass a bad material? Should I stay away from it? Or are these people just being assholes? Thanks.

Yes, fiberglass cracks but its easily repaired if you have the right materials of course, its much more lighter and flexible than steel but that's where u compromise weight vs durability. Keep in mind that the more times u fix the mold the more imperfections u will get on it, basically its time consuming to get it perfect just like it was. I personally would never sell somethn broken to any1, Its a matter of decency or respect i guess.

I'd have to see a picture of the crack. Depending on the crack, it shouldn't be that hard.

GOOOD fiberglass is pretty strong and flexible. The fact that it got cracked in shipping points to probably bad packing but more importantly bad handling. I have dropped fiberglass spoilers from the trunk of a car without much issue before.

Take a picture and post it. If shops laughed at you then it is probably bad or they are over-charging.

I cant believe they would laugh in your face. Yes fiberglass is nasty to work with. Remember Corvettes, pickup camper shells are made of fiberglass and they are still around. The crack must be really bad. (granted they are made of a composite process now, but essentually the same). It might just be that they dont want to deal with it. I used to restore corvettes when I lived in Dallas Ft Worth

dont get me wrong, a good shop can repair that, but the materials and time to bring back to paintable condition would be high

Well that brings me to my original question is fiberglass a decent material that we should invest on? Or should we wait until someone comes up with a better and more reliable one?
Nothing at all wrong with Fiberglass. I would not hesitate buying anything made from FG. I think you just got a bad piece. ABS plastic would probably be the worst material. The only other option if it comes out would be Carbon Fiber

I believe the seller is responsible for everything until the product gets to you.. So to me, it should be very easy to get a refund.. I say go for a refund and just move on.. He shouldn't have sold one already broken/should have packaged better/should have picked a better company to get it to you..

Thats fairly easy to fix if you want to put in the time. you can stuff "kitty hair" into the cracks and let it completely dry. Then sand it down flush and prime/paint. I have seen alot worse get repaired fairly simple. Kitty hair is a bondo with fibgerglass strands mixed in. You can also toss a very thin layer of corvette bondo to make it uniform.

The corvettes are still being made with Fiberglass and carbon fiber. Even some military aircraft still use a fiberglass like material.
