Long term effects of magnet removal

9324 Views 12 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  jared
For those who have removed the magnet from the stock airbox, what effects are you seeing? Have you left the magnet out or replaced it? Is mileage still down a little? Less mileage could be a result of pressing the gas more to see what happens. Is your original 'power wave' problem still solved? Any new problems that you think are a result of the magnet removal?

Thanks for any input.

I noticed when I took my airbox apart to install my SRI, that the filter was very dirty from sucking in all the air directly from the engine compartment. I think long term effects would just be more replacements of the filter.

I can't say I know the Long Term Effects because I've only had the magnet out for about a month. The throttle reponse is waaaaaay better, but my gas mileage has gone down about 3 mpg in day to day driving. Up to you to determine if this MOD is worth those 3 miles per gallon :) I think of it as, Hey a CAI doesn't have it, so why not remove it?!
I have found that since removing it my intake makes this huge whooshing noise and my car goes faster. But I also removed the resonator box and the upper and lower intake baffles. And the upper intake tubing. And the factory air box. And factory filter...

So all u have left is the stock screws?
They are all push plugs. I put them back in. Without them the holes create a harmonic resonance in the unibody. I'm looking for a vendor that supplies light weight urethane push plugs...
I have not noticed a thing. I can still replicate this issue that removing the magnet was supposed to fix. I do hear the intake slightly more at low throttle than I did before. I am not tracking milage either way.

I just took my magnet out today. So far I don't notice anything. Way too soon to tell a difference in mileage. Just wondering what folks thought who had done it a while ago.
Im with Jared, What i noticed was all negative, I put the magnet back in last week after having it out for about 4 months and now I am running 91 octane, the car is more responsive and very little or no lag, gas mileage is up a bit. I have an Auto Trans.
Been about a month since I pulled mine. Didn't have enough previous mileage data to confirm any change. My power still feels wavy when I go WOT. Hopefully my TurboSocks CAI will take care of anything intake related...
I noticed the difference removing the magnet from the start. Using 93 octane helped as well. Car runs sooo much better now. I had 1800 miles on the ODO when I pulled out the magnet. I'm at 3000 miles now. Not going back to the magnet any time soon! Averaging around 29 mpg..same as before removing the magnet.
Hi everyone.....I am brand new to the site and a new VT owner. Just curious what you mean by removing a magnet? What is it supposed to do if you remove it? Thx
