Hi all,

not happy with my asthmatic sounding VT, but not willing to part with nearly $1k for an after-market exhaust system .... I thought I might try a cheap alternative, like removing the rear "suitcase" and replacing it with a piece of straight thru pipe ... but rather than go to all the trouble of a Y adapter and pipes upto the valance I thought I would just dump it out behind the RH rear wheel. If I like the result I will do a proper job and take it thru the valance and put some nice tips on it.

For $120 for the bent pipe (DIY fitting) the results are quite good. The best bit is that because the pipe is dumping on the RHS ... with the window down it sounds even better.
I feel that with it re-directed thru the valance I may not be able to hear it as well.

Dont get me wrong .... its still no Evo8 or WRX, but its a bit better than stock ... and cheap too. No discernible change to performance.

I was going to put a Varex on ... but I am glad I tried this now ..... the difference between stock "suitcase" and straight thru isnt worth $400 + fitting for a Varex.

Has anyone ever done this and removed the central resonator, maybe remove the central resonator and then a Varex would be the way to go ???

I think the dual rear tips is one of the coolest features of the VT. Shame to lose out on it. But if you like it that's all that matters. Video please :D

so you have two holes in back not doing anything..? doesnt that look funky..?
Yup ... I have 2 holes. Unless you get on your knees and peer straight thru them, you wouldnt know they are not connected.

3 options -
1 - attach a piece of sheet metal to the back of the holes to fill them up .... and spray paint matt black (or even attach some "faker" pipes)
2 - redirect pipe to a Y piece and take out thru existing holes and terminate with some nice tips.
3 - remove entire tip assembly and do something original ??

I am still keen to remove the central resonator ... in that case ... with the increased LOUD, I would definitely exit back thru the original rear holes/valance.

Finally got around to finishing this project.
Happy with the exhaust note after removing the rear muffler, I decided to buy a new flange, gasket and a whole pile of mandrel bends (from Best Mufflers Online, Exhaust System Parts Specialists) and fabricate my own axle back system exiting at the original openings.
To do this I made a jig out of some scrap steel lying around the workshop. The jig supported the original muffler and pipe and marked the key support hangers.
Now i have finished the exhaust I no longer have a need for the jig. I was going to just cut it up and throw it away but I thought I might offer it up to any VT owners in Perth, Western Australia who might want to embark on the same project.
You will need access to a TIG or MIG and a vertical bandsaw as there is a fair bit of cutting to do on the mandrel bends to get them to all line up.
The exhaust note is a bit louder than the original dump pipe out the side of the car. I think it maybe something to do with the low pressure area at the rear of the car ... but it is still no where near too loud.
Anyway ... if you want the jig (free) please PM me.
