Hey guys, I know I made a previous OCC post, but this is for a different reason. My OCC has been leaking and even after putting silicon and tightening lose bolts, it still leaks...

So for the guys who have had successful OCCs, which ones did you buy? Could you give me a direct link or at least the name and brand of the OCC? I know the billet one is good, but it's somewhat pricey. If this is the only OCC available (meaning all people recommend it for not leaking and other fantastic characteristics), I might just suck it up and buy it.

The catch can not only has to be oil tight it has to be air tight, so that inlet vacuum will draw blow-by gasses from the crankcase ventilation system. If the catch can is not air tight, deposits will form inside the motor. Closed PCV systems do more than just pass emission control requirements, and they have paid a plart in extending the running lives on contemporary engines. I have a Radium catch can and it is most certainly oil tight and air tight with o-rings on the joint between the upper and lower halves, on the dipstick and on the inlet and outlet nipples.

which catch can were you running?

i have an ebay one that i stuffed steel scouring pads. recently i've been looking into catch cans again also because i just got a job offer and can afford pretty things now. after reading alot about this, these were some of my personal ideal characteristics of a OCC

- air/oil tight - for reasons cbrmale listed
- easy to drain - personally i don't think the drain on the bottom is easy to drain. and i would have to double check the teflon tape that i put on to ensure a tight seal each time to make sure it's ok. if i were to empty the can without removing the can, i would have to find a way to get a cup or pan or something underneath it which, depending on where you mount it, might not be possible and rather messy. i would rather have the can come apart somehow in place with just the reservoir removed and be able to dump
- has a filter - necessary. possibly removable/replaceable
- has a mounting point
- inlet and outlet separated by the filter - maximum efficiency. this is a benefit that just baffling an empty can doesn't have

that being said, these are some that i personally have been looking at in no particular order. most are going to be in the $100+ range

1) billet technology original catch

price 100-120? pretty ideal. o-ring seals. reservoir unscrews off to empty the can. blow by goes through the inlet directly through mesh. the mesh has a guard. inlet and outlet clearly separated. mounting point is a little awkward because it was designed for other makes. inlet and outlet are on the sides of the catch - depending on where you mount it, may be a bit wide.

2) Elite Engineering PCV Oil Catch Can

price 160? also pretty ideal. reservoir unscrews off. gas goes through the inlet directly through mesh. mesh is in its own separate can that mounts inside the catch (pretty neat). o rings. mounting point is also weird because it was designed for other makes. the way the inlet and outlet is set up, the occ can fit in narrower spaces than the billet tech, but more expensive

3) 42 Draft Design Stealth Oil Catch Can

price 130? one solid piece that doesn't unscrew open. has a drain on the bottom. gas goes through inlet directly through their own designed filter (not a mesh, probably costly to replace). has a pretty convenient mounting point which allows for vertical or horizontal mounting bracket. comes in wrinkle black powdercoat which makes it seem more OEM

4) Radium Engineering Universal Catch Can
Dezoris did a very good DIY about this can
price 180-200. NOTE this can does NOT come with barb fittings. must buy separately (o_O)? reservoir unscrews as well as drains on bottom with optional drain kit. have the option of putting as many SS screens in as you want depending on hose length. blow by goes through SS screens. o rings everywhere, dip stick.

5) Saiko Michi

price $60+ depending on size. one solid piece that doesn't screw open with drain on bottom. inlet and outlet separated by the baffling mesh. honestly, probably one of the best bang for buck

there are probably a bunch of other designs that are cheaper and just as effective. all personal preference. i prefer pretty things so the homemade cheapo one is not going to cut it for me. just my 2 cents /end rant

Thanks guys for the responses. Especially vicng87! Thanks man for all those pictures, names, and descriptions! I'll look into those catch cans.
Btw vicng87, i am using a cheap ebay catch can that I bought for around 20 bucks. It was one of the ones Turbosocks recommended, not to discredit him in any way. Just got a shitty product lol.

I got one of the EBay cans and posted in another thread that the top hose barbs are loose and need tightening.

If you simply installed the OCC without checking the pieces for tightness, well - shame on you!

Aside from leaking a little oil I do not subscribe to the scare words about a leaky OCC.

If the can is leaking a little bit there will be no real harm.

Obviously, seeing the OEM system and how it is hooked up you can surmise that it is not

considered a critical area by the car manufacturer. So, why should you?

While their product might be nice, the website sucks.
You'd think with as much business as he does, he could afford someone to throw a site together and keep it up to date.

Not even asking for a nice site. Just something that looks a tiny bit less "extreme religious cult". Pages of blocked out text and a minimalist interface just freaks me out.
Look at #turbosocks website. Not fancy, but easy to use.

I'm planing on buying a Saikou Michi OCC. What hose sizes do we need?

It depends on how you plumb your catch can. The PCV outlet on the cam cover is 8mm while the other end at the inlet manifold is 12mm. I bought 8mm fuel hose and an 8mm barbed fuel hose joiner and plumbed my catch can from the PCV outlet, and then into the stock PCV hose using the barbed joiner and two clamps. After 1200km I have about 1 cem of oil in the catch cen which surprises me; I didn't think they produced that much oil. I didn't buy the Saikou Michi because the website was difficult to understand and it would have taken weeks to have a can 'made' (one standard can and two fittings?). Then 6 to 8 weeks for the United States Postal Service to ship it to Australia. So I bought a Radium can and saved myself weeks of waiting for it to be made, although it still took 6 weeks in the mail.

Off topic I can get a parcel from the UK, Europe, Japan or Korea in less than a week, so I don't buy things online from US vendors any more, unless I have no other option.
