Today was the day for the first polish of my VT. I found two very rough sections of paint above the drivers and passengers doors beside the sunroof. When you run your hand over it it's easy to feel the texture difference and a scratching sound can be heard when you go from the good paint to the problem bit. I think it's sus that its the same on both sides. I have had the car since late December. Any ideas? Going to talk to hyundai next week.
Thanks
John.

So, I removed some tar from my paint with this product: Tarminator by Stoner.
I use their glass cleaner with great success, so I figured I'll try their other products.
The tar came off alright, but look what happend as well:

I am appalled and scared at the same time. That blue-ish drip seems to be behind the clear coat now. I clay bar'd the whole side without success.
Why???? WHY MEEEEE???? :(

Do some searching and see if anyone else has reviews about it... I don't see why a product like that would act like a paint thinner

Hyundai dealer needs to fix that.... if you saw what was wrong with my car in previous posts, they ended up fixing my issue under warranty. Yes there is a high chance something got under the clear coat, I have seen it first hand.

Hyundai is riding a fine line with the VT paint.

My Marathon Blue VT still looks great after 6 months and only doing low impact car washes and no wax. It still really stands out in a parking lot and I still get compliments about how great the finish looks. There is no inconsistency in its paint.

However, my paint has a pronounced orange peel texture. The clear coat covers it and overall it has a fine smooth finish. I didn't see it at first but at dusk and dawn you can see it.

I mentioned this to my dealership during an oil change and they were genuinely concerned about it. The sales lady brought out an old dude who knew what he was talking about to look at it. Initially we couldn't see the orange peel but it was the evening and sure enough as the sun went down it became apparent. The sales lady babbled some nonsense and the old dude and I discussed the issue. I started with that orange peel typically means too much humidity in the paint booth. He agreed. He followed with that he was impressed by the VT's finishes and all of the metallic colors had some orange peel to them - and showed me some other metallic Velosters that had similar finishes. I agreed. I told him that mine has a more pronounced orange peel than them and since mine was a special order that I took delivery of during the day I didn't notice it. I told him that if they had a wide selection of VT's on the lot I may not have chosen this one. He agreed.

He went on to say that if I was not happy with the paint they would repaint it for free during the first year warranty. The sales lady wasn't happy with that. I looked nervously at their service building. He said that they had a real paint shop and had the real PPG paint for it. I asked him if they would take it down to the metal and reapply primer, paint and clearcoat. He said they would. I asked him if they would pull the drivetrain and interior and spray the whole thing. He said they would not do that. Then we discussed the pros and cons of a hand sprayed paint job versus a factory paint job in detail. I decided that I would stick with the factory paint. It was really nice that the dealer had someone that knew what they were talking about and was knowledgeable about the VT.

Chips in my paint revealed more about the VT. The paint is really thin. Hyundai is very proud about the Veloster's weight and apparently the paint is part of that. I ordered the official touch-up paint and it was $25 - not great but not terrible. When it arrived it did not come with the clear coat. That was another $25 and it was not in stock. I was grumpy and did not pick it up until my next oil change. A quick chat with a sympathetic parts guy got me both paints for $30.

The paint on my Battleship-coloured car is quite fine without any flaws, and has taken 13,000km of mostly country road driving with no stone chips, so is quite durable. The pearl finish has minimal orange peel and is as good as any car I have owned. I have waxed it twice so have checked it in detail and to end and I would have noticed any flaws.

You will always have some orange peel so it's degrees which make the difference: minimal versus visible.

For paint finish the worst I have seen is Toyota. They are delivered brand new just a month after build with the front and rear bumpers shaded differently to the rest of the car. Apparently they spray these bumpers in a different factory and then bolt them on towards the end of the build process. The shading isn't just a minor difference; it's really, really noticeable.
