Hey guys,

Wife is pretty set on trading in her daily beater the 2011 Elantra for a 2013 Veloster Turbo AT in white. Went for a test drive on saturday and are planning on ironing out the details and getting it done this coming week.

Had a couple of questions.

First. During the test drive, the car seemed... ungodly slow. She will be getting an AT as her commute is 50 miles each direction with ugly traffic. The car felt... around the same as the elantra. I think i had read that the car cuts boost when its low on gas? I think the tank said that there was only 13 or 17 miles left and was on the last notch of gas left. I was wondering if this was true? I also took it for a quick spin as well, and could not feel the turbo spooling up, or any torque surge from hitting boost. I am sure it did not help that we had been driving around all day in my gtr, and we also took the gtr to the dealership. but still it seemed quite a bit more snailish than we were expecting. We had a 2005 minicooper S AT, and it felt much slower than that car.

Second. Is there anything specific about the car or problems I should know about before we jump head in that could make it an unreliable daily? I have read around a bit in the forums, and it does not seem that there were any anything particular other than rattles, which I expect in most cars anyways. I have rattles in every car ive owned... so me and my wife have gotten immune to it. FD, 350z, minicooper, s5, gtr, elantra.

Third. What are the thoughts on the ultimate package? It seems like a pretty nice value, but the problem is we dont really use any of the features that are included. it just the cheap price of 2500 for everything that is kind of drawing me to it. And also the two tone roof, due to the panoramic sunroof. I am thinking I will probably just not get the package, and plastidip the roof black and call it a day. I really like the Veloster with a black roof to set off the car.

Anyways, thanks for any help you guys can provide. I am a modder/forum rat when it comes to my cars, so I have to slowly try and ease my wife into letting my mod the veloster... I am waiting on better canned tunes to come out and be tried and true, and it seems there is alot of power to be had in that department which is always nice.

Oh... and my wife is quite pissed about the Re-Mix edition... wtf? lol. She loves the rims (I do too) and does not understand why they arent offered on the turbo model. bah.. and i bet itll be an option or on the turbo for 2014... T_T

The car doesn't really open up until after the break in period.

Only problem some people have had is speakers really, though they usually upgrade or have them fixed through warranty.

Talk to the dealer about switching the rims as part of the deal, my buddy recently did this when he picked up an elantra gt, he chose different rims that the dealer could order.

I do hope that is true... even the wife was a bit surprised how slow the car felt...

im not sure if they would be willing to throw in the remix rims.. the current deal we are talking about seems to be beating them up already a bit. ill speak to my guy and see what he says about possibly swapping it out.

Low on gas and not up to operating temps will also make the car feel slow. They dont really seem to open up until you put some miles on them. The turbo and the BPV are both pretty quiet, so you cant really hear much.

Odd rattle and speakers as mentioned. A few of us in the colder temps have had the purge valve replaced. Under warranty of course and it didnt effect the car at all. The VTs seem to be a pretty solid car. I have 30,000kms (18000mls) and mine has been perfect. No rattles or blown speakers.

Id get the Ultimate package. $2500 isnt alot more to spend and the options really are nice IMO. Roof and Navi are great features to have and the backup camera and 115v outlet are nice too.

Im sure they could add the Remix wheels, but for the cost you could probably buy much nicer ones.

I had an 07 Mini Cooper and it was a turd compared to my VT.

Drive the non-turbo Veloster and then come back and call the Turbo ungodly slow.:haha:
funny, she refused to drive the non-turbo after the turbo test drive due to the Turbo feeling so slow, she didnt feel the car would be driveable.

But like you guys are saying, the car did only have around 10 miles on it. and we took it right off the lot so it did not have time to warm up, which could def. be a part of the reason why we felt that way.

Don't get it. Horrid car. Never gets fast.

No, just kidding.

They never seem to break-in until you are on your third oil change or so.

They get fast, mine is at any rate. Fuel economy also mellows out after a bit.

If she is all Honey Badger about the Ultimate edition, don't get it. Just makes the car heavier.

picture of GTR attached. its me and wife at the Wilzig Racing Manor for a charity event doing paced laps around the Alan's track. The dude has a track in his backyard... no joke... look it up.

The power of the car honestly doesnt matter to her... as it is just her get to work and back car. She just loves the way it looks. The power thing is more for me... so we will definitely give it till break in and a oil change or 2 for a little more kick to roll in. Hopefully by that time some of the canned tunes will have been out for a few months and road tested. Seriously though... you guys aiming for 300whp... are making me itch to try and get this car into 12's... haha. Dont think the wife will let me though... but ill let u know how that works out.

well damn nice GTR! my VT has almost 1400 miles on it and i absolutely love driving it, i often times find excuses for me to go out and get something for myself or the wife just so i can drive it. the car does buck like a bronco and kind of sluggish until its fully warmed up. see if the dealership will let you take it home or drive it for at least half a day, mine let me drive it for 2 days before i bought it. you will not be let down with this car

Thnx! Wife is pretty set on the car regardless of the power, as she wasnt buying it for the power. She will be happy to hear that we probably just didnt warm up the car enough, and that it needs a few miles before it will come alive. Other than, the car feels slightly sluggish, she was overall very pleased with the car.

What do you guys think of plastidipping the roof a white car? not even sure why im asking haha. ill probably do it anyways and post pictures. hope to close on the car by wednesday or earlier so will post up some pictures then!

I concur on the more the VT is driven the more it seems to open up. The 93 octane fuel doesn't hurt either.
I'm having issues with my head unit. Taking it in tomorrow for a check up. Seems to be a problem with some of the Velosters. Mine freezes sporadically and the Bluetooth works when it wants too.

Nice GTR! Fellow at work bought one of these a couple of months ago.

Very nice GT-R, I know a guy here that has his setup for racing and that thing is INSANE! I have yet to ride in one of the newer ones but have been in the 96 R34 GTR and a 67 2000GT.

When you get the VT get the FMIC from Turbosocks, DP from Pierce, and 3" Solo exhaust, oh and a nice CAI and you will definatly feel a difference.

yup, its really fun. I havent gone crazy with it yet. Just intake/injector/midpipe/exhaust/custom tune on 93 octane. should be around low 500 to the wheel. havent taken it to a road course yet. I will be going on Sept 15th. should be a blast. other than that, i have upgraded the stock subwoofer, and it has a front lip and new front rotors. I have taken it to the drag strip... 10.7 best ET and 129 is best trap, with bad traction. hoping to get that down to a 10.5 or 10.6 in the fall.

yup def looking at a few of the mods. pricing so cheap vs what im paying to mod the gtr that i just wanna do everything... haha. but i have to slowly break in the wife. as it is her DD, she gets touchy when i start changing stuff. Currently she has agreed to the free atmospheric vent change for the stock BOV, and after a couple thousand miles, we will be getting a canned tune. then ill work on each peice after that haha.
