Hi there folks!

I tried using the search bar, but the only thing it picked up was a thread from 2012. I just picked up a 2015 Vitamin C VT, and I have been putting in only premium "supreme clean" gas from Irving. In NB and NS, the premium gas is the only gas without ethanol. I heard however that putting in high octane gas in an engine that is made for regular can be bad. What do you guys use? Why?

Thanks!

only premium.... why... for one I am tuned and two helps the car run better.... you will hear people say it doesn't make a difference... I found that MY car ran better with premium.

The ECU is adaptive... that is why you should disconnect the battery prior to doing any performance mod.... helps the ECU learn faster....

I only run Shell 91 no ethanol. Drove 1 month on regular when I bought it, but have been driving Shell since. Have noticed 0 performance difference. Mileage seems better. Wallet doesn't mind too much, it's just an extra 20 cents per litre or so, you stop caring about the extra cost after a while.

Doing it for the additives more than anything really. At least that's what I'm telling myself.

I use cheap old 87 octane on mine. I used to run 93 octane top tier gas, but I didn't feel like spending the money and noticed no difference in performance. I do run a fuel system cleaner every oil change now since I'm not using top tier gas with all the cleaning additives anymore.

If you're not tuned, I wouldn't waste the money. I saw no performance or mileage difference from 93 octane, except a lighter wallet. Try it for yourself- run three or four tanks of 93, then run all 87. I'd be surprised if you noticed any difference.

In the manual it states that the car can run on regular but for best performance use premium. I personally felt the difference between regular and premium. I dont feel any different between mid grade and premium though.

For a stock vehicle, do you think it is worth it? Or am I just wasting money?
I run stock powertrain for 2+ years. I tried regular, premium, and whatever is in between.

Is there a difference? Yes.
Is it worth it? It depends on you. Personally, I find the gain negligible for it to be worth the extra money.

My advice? Try it for yourself.

I say this as someone who has experience with other Hyundai engines (used both in Hyundai and Kia). You see, these engines are MADE for premium octane. However, due to the hype about gas prices, they are also configured to run on regular. I personally call this "compatibility mode". The reason I say these are made for premium, is simply by looking at their high compression ratio. I also say this based on experience.

I tried naturally aspirated Soul, and Tucson, and the premium makes a HUGE, noticeable difference both on performance and mileage. However, when I did the same on the VT, I was disappointed. Mileage was more or less the same, while performance gain was, meh. Compression ratio is also noticeably lower (9.5:1) than the aforementioned vehicles', even the NA Veloster has higher CR (11:1). I am not sure how it works, but it seems like it is the reason for increased performance, and it makes sense in my head.

In the end, I don't really call it an "increase" or a "gain". I call it normal mode. Performance is cut when not using premium, hence, "compatibility mode". Car makers are starting to make these types of engines (high compression ratio, with no engine knocks when using lower octane), but Hyundai and GM are among the first to do so.

Do a google of everything I just said, and judge if you want to believe it or not.

I noticed something at a local gas station here today while fueling up.. they have 2 tanks underground but the have 4 choices at the pump diesel 87 90 and 92 only 2 hoses on the pump itself and only 2 pump counters... so I pumped a gallon of 87 and the right counter clicked up same with the 90 and 92 hmmm hoaxing us into thinking were buying better grade or is there an additive in line somewhere I'm not seeing... even still price difference between 87 and 92 is almost 75 cents

Ive been using non-ethanol 93 octane last couple of fill ups. I get about 3-4 MPG more city and 6-8 MPG highway. And it also runs smoother than with ethanol.

Still debating if its worth the 50c markup. Leaning towards yes.

No difference in 87, 89, 93 in the 2 VT's Ive owned. Performance wise or millage wise.

We don't have non ethanol fuel here it's all 10%. I wouldn't use it anyway

To my knowledge in supporting of a gas station at work, 2 tanks underground. 1 tank holds 87 octane, the other holds 91 octane. When you select 89 octane, 87 & 91 octanes mixes into 89 octane. That's what I was told by the general manager on how the system works anyway.

If the VT adapts why wouldnt hyundai advertise as extra power with premium like they do with their other vehicles? Doesnt make sense to do unless premium costs the same.

just remember the octane level is not a about power is about how knock resistant the gas is.. the VT and Forte turbo with just basic bolt ons with out a tune.. should just run good quality top tear 87 or 89.. and try to find gas with as little ethanol as possible.. Ethanol is the killer.. the tuned guys out there run high octane gas because they bought tunes that were designed around that added knock resistance built in to that fuel.. running premium fuel will not give you more power.. it just gives you more over head protection agents knock..
