If it is an ECU swap that doesn't leave the stock ECU in place Hyundai will know.

If it is an ECU flash then Hyundai will also know. Given that the VT's ECU is more of a CPU than an EPROM flashing may not be the right term. It might take swapping the "application" and not just changing settings. And if it is an application it is probably compiled and not just a text file. Once you change the settings you might have to compile the code before you download it to the ECU.

Since there hasn't been much noise about a tuned ECU being actual available for the VT I assume that it is not an easy task to produce one. I'd much rather have a tuner company take their time and get it right before they release it. There might be a lot of work in producing the unit that reads and writes to the ECU too.
Tune will give them alot of power to outright void any repairs that may occur even if not related to the tune. It's hard enough to get them to fix the stuff they know is a factory defect, imagine trying to get something warranted after a tune.
Page 20 in the warranty manual is pretty clear that any modification voids the warranty.

Squeezing more than 125hp/l from the stock engine will definitely void the warranty.

0.o ? how will they know?

But I mean these cars are new and stuff usually doesn't start acting up till after the warranty (for the most part).
Plus if something does miss up, a simple diagnostic, tools, replacement part, and a mechanically inclined mind/hands should do the trick. I know it is easier said than done. But that is the chance you gotta take when you buy these cars and want to customize it.
The ECU has a mileage ticker on them just like the BMWs that have a similar setup to the VT.

The thing is that the VT has a 100k mile warranty while most every other car has a 20k mile warranty. If you chunk a motor on a GTI you can find another one in the junkyard. If you chunk a motor on an M3 it is worth so much that $10k is worth spending.

There is maybe 5k VTs in America now and a handful in junkyards. If you chunk the VT's motor and Hyundai won't replace it you are stuck in a sticky situation. Hyundai is going to charge a fortune to ship a new VT motor to you - if they even have one available. Local shops aren't going to be able to rebuild it because of the uniqueness, tolerances and the lack of parts availability. It won't help that a used Hyundai with a rebuilt motor won't have a great resale value.

On the other side, I think the VT motor is perfect for the current market and could become a cult sensation. What is there not to like about a super lightweight motor that gets 201hp, great mileage and has a great warranty? I expected Hyundai to tweak this motor for a few years and a few variants before putting it in other cars. Apparently Hyundai feels that they got this motor right and we will see it in two more cars next year completely unchanged. If Hyundai makes a million of these motors than it will be a very different situation and replacing one will not be a big deal.

Until then I'm not comfortable modifying it and voiding the warranty.

You know this for certain? Where have you seen/heard this?
If i do anything to the motor besides bolt ons im going to bisi. I know it would cost alot but he has proven him self that he can make about anything for any car aand make huge power. Elentra gt by him made over 600 hp. Why hasent cobb made a access port or something like that
So, messing with, or changing the ecu with a tune will automatically wreck your engine? Why are people so against this again? Couldn't there be a function to switch between the oem version and the tuned version?
Not against it at all.....just wanna make sure you all know you have to pay out of pocket for anything that happens after a tune. If the tuner warranties his product that is a different story , but there is a fat chance of that ever happening. For those of you that have disposable income, the tune would be great, anything that may go wrong you can afford to replace. Not everyone can live that way. I want the tune myself, but wont get it till after the car is at least paid off, where i have funds for such a thing and a five year record of the effects of a tune on other people VTs. hehe

Funny, or smart ;) :D
You guys really should read up on the various SFR tunes, both on the SFR website and on Sonata, Optima and Genesis Coupe forums. Lots of the comments and info posted in this thread is very much incorrect.

I don't have the time at this moment to find and read about said forums, but perhaps you can shed a little bit of light on what you are saying about being incorrect? Are the statements made incorrect or the fears of wrecking an engine or dealing with the dealer after a tune incorrect? I know I'd appreciate it. TIA

Its Genesis specific, but I cant see the VT being any different.

Ive had both of my Genesis reflashed and Ive never had any issues at the dealer. In fact, Ive never heard of anyone having any issue. I know personally about 15 Genesis owners with various SFR tunes, all problem free. The reflash, both on your cars ECU or another separate ECU (if they supply them for the VT) contain your cars data (eg VIN) only altered to your specific mods or a general upgraded tune. They even save the OEM tune data for future use.
