I've been lurking the forum for quite a while now. So, first off, thank you all for the information that you have posted. The info has been great and even helped me decide on the Veloster.

I have had my car for about a week now (ordered it 9 weeks before that), and decided that it was time to plastidip the thing. I was able to get everything removed and dipped that I wanted with the exception of the grey portion of the side skirt. Can someone explain to me how to get them off? Is it possible to get off without removing the colored portion of the skirt?

Thank you all in advance

No you would have to take off the other part as there are screws holding from the back side. I just taped off around and sprayed in place. You can clean up any over spray with goo-off or mineral spirits. You can remove the tape just after you spray your last coat and you wont have to worry about it peeling the dip off.

Thank you for the quick response! You are actually the one that I was hoping would reply. I actually had never heard about plastidip until I saw your V. Yours looks great by the way.

It's a bummer about the skirt. Im a bit leery about getting it on the paint after a close call the other day. The dip actually stained the paint a little. I had to scrub the CRAP out of it with goof off. I'll just be extra carful I guess.

BT is damned good with this car, I must say. He is exactly right with the skirts. I was going to take them off today and dip them but the only thing that kept me from doing it was......I didn't have enough double sided tape to put them back on afterwards. I didn't even tape them. I just sprayed 4 coats or so and once I was done......I just ed a microfiber cloth and rub it off. it was actually pretty easy.

I don't feel like messing with taking them off after what you guys say. I am definitely going to tape them off as close as possible to the grey section though.

Here is a picture of the stained paint I mentioned before. After only having the car for about 6 days, that scared the hell out of me.

Seems like you may have done something out of the ordinary. I've not had that problem at all......and I've done front and rear badges, front lip and sides, rims, and spoiler. What did you do......from start to finish on the hood?

I cleaned the area with 50/50 isopropyl alcohol/water, taped the area, then applied about 5 coats. After it dried, I pealed off the excess.

It isn't something I blame on the plastidip. I talked to Fanzie at dip your car. The guys at dip your car were great helps. I am pretty sure that it has something to do with how fresh the paint is. Mine is less than 1 month according to the ship dates my dealer gave me. I read on their forum that the paint should be ~6 months old to allow the paint to fully cure before applying dip.

Anyway, its better now. And after redipping with the parts off, it looks better than ever.

I'm not sure about the cause. It was just a guess, but it made sense to me. I did not scrub with the alcohol, just a quick wipe to get rid of oils. I also did the rear badges. The veloster and turbo badges did the same thing, but the H didn't stain.

I did use painters tape. I taped a square around the vent (the stained area is the part that was not masked off.

It's all good though. It all came off with goof off.

Hmm I also haven't had any issues and my first go around I had a bit of overspray because of the lack of knowledge I had on using it.. No prior experience... I would just paint the sides after taping everything off

I dipped my side skirt lip a week ago. I went to taking it off and removed all the screws bottom and side and saw that there is a doubled sided tape that holds it to the car itself along with white clips. Since I was at home, I didn't have my tools, since they were at the shop to remove them. I ended up taping it up really good, and covered the whole left side of the car. I had some over spray on the hood and it scared the shit out of me. I just washed it and washed it and it finally came off. All white PD came off that was on the hood :D

That stain looks like glue from the painters tape, make sure you use the automotive safe one not the household painters tape (on glass its fine just not paint)

I actually want to remove the front and side skirts completely... Has anyone done this? I took all of the screws off of one side skirt, but it seems to be fastened/glued near the front where the inner-facing screw was. The front skirt looks like it's glued to the front valence, any tips on removing these pieces?
I answered you on the other thread you posted in. http://www.velosterturbo.org/forum/veloster-appearance/1235-has-anyone-painted-gray-skirt-accents-different-color-4.html#post39113
