Struts/Shocks after installing aftermarket springs

Like many cars I've had in the past, I notice that the stock shocks wear faster and don't perform as well when you couple them with lowered springs. I've often bought shocks/struts a while later like KYB, etc., that are the right length for the lowered distance. I'm not going overboard on modifying this car so this discussion isn't about expensive coil overs. I've already bought the lowered springs and installed as many others have as well. I'm curious if anyone has upgraded their struts and what is available for the Veloster (VT or NAV because they are the same suspension).

Thanks!

By the way, I need to get a pic but I chose Eibach Pro Kit and love it but the travel on the stock struts is a lot when at freeway speeds and you hit a dip and I want the right strut that will have less rebound.
I dont think theres much on the market yet besides oem replacements but I know Koni has theirs out but that goes out the window if you like your wallet.
I found them on ebay for $670 for the front and the back. they lifetime warranty which is real good. but $670 us steep :banghead:
also on the NGM website it says " Road tested with OEM shocks for the ultimate balance between performance, styling and comfort." so I'm confused as to if NGM(which I'm going to get) or anything else is low enough to "blow" a strut.

I remember when I was on cb7 turner forums people would always say once they had dropped their car it would blow their struts in a matter of months. but these are 93 accords and who knows if these were original struts or cheap aftermarket struts that just couldn't hold up to the drop. not to mention it wasn't a 1.25" drop like these lowering are dropping our vt, we were dropping our cb7s by 2 to 3 inches.
you will be fine for quite a while with ngms and stock dampners i can almost guarentee
The simplest way to look at it is a strut or shock has a sweet spot where it's designed to operate (not bottom or top out). Lowered springs shortens the travel and takes away that sweet spot and you're mostly riding and wearing that strut in the lower positions and that's why they wear out. Getting a shorter strut for lowered applications is better than stock so even a cheap replacement like a gas strut at Les Schwab or Discount Tire (whatever brands they have) would probably be an improvement. I've had KYB and Koni and love them so it's just a matter of getting a good deal. (my opinion...I'm no mechanic, but as a consumer I've been on both ends of the spectrum - stock/wrong equipment vs. performance/right replacement).
well, right now the only thing available are those konis and for that price you might as well get NGM coilovers. from what I've heard, NGM coilovers are as comfortable as stock.

I never priced koni or kyb so I don't know which would be cheaper. but if they're both going to be that expensive, I hope rolling on stock struts will be alright for a while with NGM or any lowering springs with stock struts.

You're quite right about lowering a car and wrecking the dampers and this WILL happen sooner rather than later. The Konis are no good because they're designed for stock springs, so lowered springs will wreck a set of Konis as well. Unless you want to throw OEM dampers at the car fairly regularly I suggest you put the stock springs back on it.
as much as you dont want to hear it about coilovers.. if you're going to go get after market struts.. it'd be in your best interest to just sell the springs and get a set of ngm betamax coilovers

as far as being as comfortable as stock.. you're very right... I have mine set on 5 from full soft on the front and 7 in the back.. very neutral feeling now.. no body roll and a VERY comfortable ride and my front is ALL the way down
I just don't get how NGM Beta max coilovers can be performance AND be as comfortable as stock o_O

Easy, being that not only is the spring rate adjustable but ride height can be adjusted independent of spring rate. Therefore you can lower the ride maintain a softer spring rate and full travel of the piston. If you want performance you can jack up the spring rate and adjust the dampening depending on the track surface.
what's the best way to adjust them? counting threads?

I wish there was a template for a guide to have a comfy ride and have no body roll and a height low but not low enough to scrape.
I measured mine with a ruler. Much easier than trying to count threads or count turns just measure it with the ruler and match the other side. My car is about 3/4 of an inch from being full low I have them set to soft dampening and very little spring preload and they handle incredible ride as soft as stock if not softer and are very easy to adjust if I want to change it up.
