What are people looking for in a tune? lets get some opinions together..

Ok, After quite a bit data logging and driving the car, I have come up with a handful of things that I would like in a 'canned' tune or some off-the-shelf tune that would make this car shine.

I am wanting to get other peoples opinions (that have driven the car a while) to see what you think also.

After reviewing a bunch of different logs, here is what I have come up with as a 'want' list so far:

For economy and performance:

  1. Cruise control AFRs more aggresive. For example, a cruise AFR of 15.5-15.7:1 instead of ~14.7:1. Being a little leaner while cruising should help get better highway mpg.
  2. Leaner fuel maps in wide open throttle conditions. The fuel maps commanded (and actual ratio) get down to a super rich 10:1 if not less which means we are being robbed of power while purely wasting fuel. Also some timing tuning would help hear also.
  3. Tune the boost control to stop tapering off to the low-ish pressure of ~12psi. Have it spike at stock levels (18-20psi) and then taper off to 14-15lbs.
  4. After looking at the logs, I am not quite sure what is going on in the 5600-6000rpm or so range with the dip in power but cleaning that up should make the car feel much better.
  5. Seeing if the car might make power until ~7100rpm and see how stable it is. By raising the redline to 7000-7100 rpm, our 0-60 time would be faster as we would be able to make 60mph in second gear instead of having to shift into 3rd gear.

I have a couple more things I would like to add later.

I am not looking for some super aggressive/dangerous tune or anything, just something with enough tweaks that will make the car more powerful, more fuel efficient and smoother under load than it is now.

What do you guys think?

I am betting that a couple mpg might be able to be netted overall while increasing the power ~12% or more (and powerband) at the same time.

My next endeavor for the car to stay tuned to will be a methanol injection system to cool the intake charge.

I'd like to see some changes in the auto transmission. In the first three gears while under medium to full throttle, the transmission does not "lock" into gear.

Also, under 3/4 throttle, the boost pressure is being vented in waves instead of smooth opening to keep pressure at optimal levels.
Launch control ftw? lol I have no idea really about it but from what I understand it kills boost lag by spooling the turbo before launch? Would this be possible on the VT? and what about on A/T or M/T?

I want alti-lag :(

Lmao

But in all seriousness

I will give you all my monies for this

I can careless for fuel economy my ECO COACH is embarrassing, and I just started using ECO yesterday and I'll continue to use it until friday but it doesn't look pretty. I honestly don't even enjoy my rides anymore with it on, so much loss of power it ain't even funny... just how I feel with it on may just be in my head. Anyways, I'm all for performance and if I'm spending 500 dollars on a tune it better be worth a huge jump in performance as it should do. Which is why a tune is way more valuable then an intake or even an exhaust upgrade. Which is actually another reason canned tunes exist because its added to a stock vehicle with no mods at all because its a lot easier for the fuel maps to adjust automatically after you install mods.
I would like to see something done about the stupid lag in acceleration after shifting gears. And the lack of power in the 5600 range. But most of all, I would love to be able to shift and immediately have some pickup rather than the half second delay.
turbosocks< your saying a leaner afr do you no the egt's when in boost..... being an aluminum setup the only possible reason i can see for so much fuel dump is for the cooling properties??? any thoughts
I am also curious to know if this thing has been tuned to limit boost in 1st and 2nd. If so, I would like to see that done away with. A little feathering of the throttle would fix wheel spin.
All of the above.....It seams that hyundai detuned this engine... with all these issues we have found already. I don't feel 201 HP most of the time when in WOT which I would imagine....I should.

This is one area where automatic transmissions have the upper hand!!! We never have to let off the throttle between gears. Therefore the turbo stays at full "spool".
The e-gas/throttle response definitely needs to be adjusted. If you've ever driven an 2.4L Sonata or a tuned VW, you will know what I'm talking about.
Turbosocks, I believe the lower redline is due to the GDI system being able to supply the full amount of fuel required when running at higher RPMs. Basically the injector cannot get the full fuel squirt in such a short period of time. I could be wrong but if I'm right, the drop in in the charting you have may be to encourage people to shift a little earlier when they feel the 'seat of the pants' power drop away.
The SFR tunes for the Genesis basically address pretty much everything that has been mentioned. The new SFR tune for the '13 Genesis 2.0T is proving to be a great mod.

Heres some light reading

I too was thinking the WOT AFR might be on the rich side to keep the combustion temps down. I know on my supercharged Challenger, the WOT AFR has to be in the high 10's - low 11's to be safe because of too much heat otherwise.

It's not a matter of the turbo spooling. It is an issue with the ecu.
Turbosocks, I think what you laid out sounds like a good start. How would your tune be applied if you get it right and we want it?
I currently drive a Mazdaspeed and pretty much the only tuning solution we use is the Cobb accessports. We need to get them on board and tuning would be incredibly easy. Also you could tweak your own tunes and the send you canned tunes as well. The accessport has the ability to datalog and you can monitor in real time(there is a tiny delay). This is personally the best choice for tuning. They have Evos,Stis, gtrs, BMWs, ford, and Mazda right now and they are pretty much go to guys for tuning. I think we should contact them.

Found the fix for the shift lag - Upper/Lower clutch switches. So amazing.
This works for us "turbos" also. But use at your own risk of course. Also you only have to pull the upper plug, or wire a switch for convienence.
I'd love to just see some decent gains especially in the low end torque department. High end horsepower is nice but for daily driving you want that torque. Also i would love a boost limiting feature for 6th gear to get some extra mpg on the highway.

This is a great car but the highway fuel economy has me yearning for more. I honestly kinda regret not going for the base over the turbo.
leaning out during cruise isn't gonna really do much more timing during cruise would help more for MPG idk even know if you could command a lean cruise on the VT

you know how i feel about a tune for the car though lo
seems like if the ECU can be cracked and tuned that commanding a lean cruise would be within those boundaries. whether it is timing or leaning under cruise conditions a little bit, over a period of time there should be a noticeable mpg difference.

why can't korea share what they have with us :p
