What's up with ALL of these Factory restrictions???

3145 Views 20 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  JGunz18
Okay, so I've had my car for a month & change now. VERY Happy with it, but have one little concern or maybe I shall call it an inquiry...

This is one of those Threads that might make some people say, "well don't Mod your car then" or perhaps, "some people just don't care."

I'm noticing a TON of little restrictions that the Factory has put in place that some pretty innovative people have found to bypass. I love the ideas & the explainations of how they work. Keep them coming!!!

BUT...My concern is, the Factory put them in for a reason. They all have purposes & since our cars are so new we won't know the repercussions for a while or until something breaks.

I have stated this before. I bought my car for the looks, because it's pretty quick & more importantly for the 200K warranty :)

For instance, today I learned of a flap in the air filter that can be Mod'ed which I'm doing for sure because a CAI doesn't have the flap either, so i know it's safe. Yesterday I learned of a plug that makes throttle response better in 1st & 2nd gear, but this one has me skeptical. The Factory does put certain restrictions in for a purpose. Whether it be for gas mileage, performance, for longevity or maybe just cause...

The purpose of this thread really wasn't to ask anything, but to get you to think wisely about the decisions you make before you make them. Be sure to do your homework before just reading a thread & thinking your a Master DIYer. Think to yourself if it's worth the Mod, should I be cheap or I should I save & do it the right way...

Food for though :)

I called the dealership and asked about bolt-ons prior to doing any. They assured me that adding a cat back or intake would not void the warranty. Its just those particular items would now, NOT be covered. (which makes sense)

Plus like you pointed out. Many here plan on going big.. tunes ect. Someone dropping 500+ on a tune is more then aware that their voiding their warranty. But as for the avg joe who wants to add on a couple mods to separate from the heard. There shouldn't be any issue.
That flap mod works as described and I tried it, but put it back stock later on because it was costing me mpg's.

I knew it was too easy and good to be true!!! That's what I was thinking a change like this would do...decrease your MPGs. If the car is surging and hesitating while in low RPMs is probably due to the ECO working. If you take off ECO, it does not happen that much. I know ECO is only for A/T. Clearly the flap is there for a reason, and altering it will indeed cause a change which will negate the reason for it being there. This is a new car and I am sure future versions of it will be better and I am hopeful the hesitation at low RPMs will be fixed. Thanks for confirming what I was afraid it would do.
You are the second or third person I have seen mention a 200k warranty. Where are you getting this information?

Ehhh I don't use eco in my AT and I still have that surge without the flap so I am pretty sure its not eco or the flap that's causing it.

Hmmm....Interesting. I do notice a difference with ECO off. Much better with it off.

Certain dealers will double the factory warranty....this is mainly a sales tactic. Who is the right mind will keep a car for more than 100k miles unless you do major driving every year? This being the main reason why I lease. Don't have to worry about my warranty running out, not to mention, monthly payments are lower.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh...........You see...This is F-in Awesome feedback!!! I did it during lunch & it is noticable, but I drive almost 100 miles a day. Might to be worth it. I'll have to monitor...Thanks!!!

I drive mucho miles, so I bought my car expecting to test this 200K mile warranty. I kept my MazdaSpeed almost until 200K, until it blew on me a few months ago...If I had this warranty I would have had a brand new motor. My oil pump stopped working & it threw a rod out the side of the block. Couldn't find a good motor for it with decent mileage, so I got the VT :) :) :)

Right, if you drive like crazy, then that 200k makes sense. But the dealers that double it are baking on you turning in the car before 100k.

Ok, thanks, if it is simply a dealer doubled 10/100 warranty on the bottom end it is nothing to be concerned with. While I keep cars for life, and consider 100k to be nominal, a modern engine properly maintained is very very unlikely to suffer a failure in a covered component. If it's not properly maintained they will simply disallow the warranty.

No matter what your dealer says, you let your turbo throw 7's and show up wanting a warranty with an aftermarket breather element, and my money is on Hyundai saying "AH!, Triton05 -san, we so sorry turbochaga fail due to ah aftermahket filtration failure, no warranty." Although I would not expect anything on the exhaust side behind the cat having any bearing on it.

You have to remember that the people on this forum are only a fraction of the people that have this car. Not everyone is interested in sacrificing things like ride comfort, quietness, and fuel economy for performance. I would say that a great majority of the restrictions are to cater to the “average” car buyer. They don’t want loud exhaust and things like that.

I work in engine development (not for Hyundai, don’t worry). The guys that go out and tune their engines are basically undermining all of my hard work  . So speaking to that, most of our restrictions come from emissions regulations, not hardware. I can have an engine rated for 300 horsepower and tune it to 400+ without doing any harm to the engines longevity. I spend about 3% of my time tuning engines to the targeted power and the rest trying to meet the emissions regulations.

That said, as far as tunes (and most other mods for that matter) on the car go, as long as you do it right and don’t get too greedy, it should be safe. There are a lot of very smart people on this forum. If someone comes out with a mod that is unsafe, someone will call them out on it.

Indeed, good sir, indeed! And we, the few, the chosen, are not the average buyer. We are the ones who eschew the best automotive warrantee in exchange for being at the bleeding edge of the mod world! Huzzah I say! Huzzah!

for the 200k mile thing. i got my car about a month ago (13 JUNE 13) and i got a call the other day the want $190 than an extra $150 Bucks a month for the extra warranty so idk about you guys but thats a little to much more for me and i plan on trading in my leased VT to own one befor a go over my miles i drive 120 miles from my drive way back to my drive way for work so its going to go fast. off topic did the bov mod and i love it and its fast to put back on if i have to bring it to the dealer.
I'm on the same page with you on keeping my warranty in effect. Hyundai has done a lot of things to make the VT's drivetrain last 100k miles that limit its power. Hyundai has a lot of experience with making the Sonata's 2.0l turbo drivetrain last 100k miles.

Before I bought my VT I drove a lot of cars and the VT was among the least powerful of them. Of all the FWD cars that I drove 200hp seemed to be the limit before they became unwieldy. The RWD cars could handle more power but they quickly became too heavy, expensive, stiff, impractical and unreliable. The AWD cars were too heavy, expensive and unreliable.

The VT has the perfect balance of power, price, practicality and reliability for me.

If I wanted a more powerful car I would not have bought the VT. For me, increasing the VT's power is not worth losing its reliability and warranty.
... my money is on Hyundai saying "AH!, Triton05 -san, we so sorry ...

I knew somebody was going to say that but I can't type phonetically correct cross dialect Korean English, so you'll have to pretend they hired a Japanese service rep to help reduce warranty claims.

You sound like my dog trying to explain how the trash bag got opened up in the kitchen.
