Window Tint Choices and Opinions

Hey all. The hot sun hitting those black leather seats are setting me on fire so it's time to tint the whip. Here where I live, the typical tint options are 35% (legal), 20%, and 5%. I've had all of them at one time or another and loved the privacy the 5% gives. However, in the past when I've had 5%, backing up was sometimes rough and at times during hard rain, I'd have to roll the windows down before pulling out into traffic. The 20% still allows semi privacy but you can still see items inside the car (plus me rocking a mean air guitar while sitting in traffic... kidding). There's no doubt that the darker tint would look the best, but I fear as small as the back glass is in the VT, it will be even harder to see out of, backing up, etc. Does anyone have any comparison pics of the 5% vs. 20% so I can visually see the difference from the exterior? Or... has anyone went with 20% and now wish they'd went darker or vice versa?

Side note: from the factory, my VT has Hyundai security stickers on both the driver and passenger interior side of the glass. Does anyone know if those must be removed prior to tinting? I kind of like the sticker as a potential deterrent and would leave them if it wouldn't interfere with the tint.

I have a black VT and I went with 20% tints which I think look great from the outside and the inside out. I'm glad I didn't go darker not only because of cops but because on a rainy night anything darker than 20% will make it extremely hard to see, atleast in my opinion. I've driven with the 20%'s on a rainy night and it wasn't unbearable but I know for me if they were any darker Id have had a real hard time with visibility especially when backing up. When I got the tints done they removed any stickers on the inside of the windows otherwise it would be prone for bubbling there I would think. I liked seeing that security sticker there as well but ppl these days have to know that a new car like the VT will have a security system ya know
Yep, 5% makes night driving and backing up tougher for sure. I'm not too concerned with getting pulled over. My last car had 5 on the back and 20 on the sides and I always wished I'd went darker on the sides. However, that car also had a much larger back glass. Do you have any pictures that show your tint? I checked and didn't see any albums or pics tied to your profile...

Good call on the stickers, I figured they may cause an issue with the tint and as expensive the tint job will be, I sure don't want potential bubbling due to the stickers.

I went with a 30% ceramic around and 20% on the large hatch glass. I still have to check harder when driving in darker areas. i have not noticed any issues backing up so far. I have no desire to go darker.
I went 35% front, 20% rear and lower hatch and 5% on the upper hatch window. I wouldn't want the 5% on the lower hatch window though.
Thank you all. I checked out your albums and the tint looks great (as do your other mods). Even though not 5%, still looks dark from the exterior. After reading your comments, I'm leaning on doing 20% all the way around.

@btjetman - how'd the rear look from the exterior after the 5% on the upper back glass and 20% on the lower hatch glass? Looking at it from the back, can you tell there's two different percentages on it?
I guess it looks the same from the outside, you just can't see in the upper glass from out side. I can take a picture in the morning if you would like to see.
A pic from the rear from normal standing position would be great. I'm thinking the 5% on the top glass may make the bottom 20% appear darker yet from inside the car looking out through the bottom glass, you'd still have better visibility. That may be a good option for me.

I went 35% front, 20% rear and lower hatch, mostly because the lady that works at the tint place "forced" me! :furious:

I got a voucher for the tint, part of my purchase, so I had no other option but do what they said; 35% is too light. However, I would not go darker than 20% front. It is kind of dangerous during the night and the VT does not have a great visibility in the back anyway.

I also suggest you to buy one of those windshield heat shield. I am planning to get mine this week. They not only reduce heat during summer but will protect and extend the life of the steering wheel and leather seats.

Good advice, thanks for the feedback. I've had 35 in the past and could never adjust to it. Every time I see your username I lol... You're not by chance a SQL guru are you? I'm in IT myself and SQL has earned me gray hairs.
I have 5% on every window in the back, 15% on the driver/passenger and 50% full windshield, I like it pitch black.
Backing up was a bit of a challenge, then I got the Hi-Power LED reverse bulbs from DiodeDynamics and they do nicely.
I have a blacked out VT with 3% tints in the back (thinking of removing and putting 5%) and have 20% in the front I live in California and so far no tickets knock on wood... But yes backing up is an issue but the look it gives my VT is incredible
I have 20% all around the back. I had 30% up front but got pulled over after 4 days (love CA sometimes...). I have no issues backing into my fairly complicated garage - long narrow straight and then a Subaru Legacy to avoid. I had 5% on my old Scion and that got to be a bit of a pain at night and when backing up.
Darker tints typically add more heat than they repel. And I'm not comfortable with making the police uncomfortable with my car. Even if they don't pull me over because of my tint I don't like getting off on the wrong foot with the police when they do pull me over.

I've found a couple high-end window films that offer their best heat (IR) rejection with clear film and darker tints actually increase the heat.

I'm thinking clear on the windshield, top and back glass and 15% on the front side windows and 25% on the rear side windows.

I'm a SQL DBA ... :D

Ohh, by the way. Please ensure it's a quality film, so it won't affect your radio or bluetooth. Also, if you pick 35 and depending of your state, some places add a sticker or label that indicates your tint are legal.

From the pic, I would have guessed your tint to be much darker. Looks great. I test drove a black VT but after have owning black vehicles in the past, I know how hard they are to keep clean. Settled on the silver but still kick myself everytime I see a black one on here, lol.

So a bad quality film can affect those? What is the best way to tell if its a quality film, what do I need to look for?
On my marathon blue I did 35% all around..
Aside from that being whats legal in ohio it has given a good balance of privacy while not hindering my ability to drive at night or in inclement weather..

You are a brave man.. well so am I because I did 20% all around XD

Metallic based tint may sometimes affect radio signal quality.

I would start by looking up reputable tint shops. Then consider some name brand tints or tints that have certiain qualities (aluminum vs ceramic vs metallic) Not all tints are created equal. Some names to consider: Hüper Optiks, Llumar, 3M. The prices on these are pretty steep especially Optiks, but they do their job for the most part.

Also, another thing to consider: when going with performance tint that really helps reduce heat and provides UV protection, you'll have to sacrifice form for function. By this I mean that some tints may not have the 'darkness' you're looking for but they'll do a better job of keeping your car cooler.
