Hi All,

So my Veloster is months away (damn having to order in!), but one good thing that has given me is heaps of time to think about options! So now I'm on windown tinting. I'm currently looking at the darkest legal tint that is available in Aus and getting all the windows done (not sure of percentage of it).

What is everyones views on tinting? Doesn the VT need it? How dark did you go? Never had to tint a car before so not entirely sure what is needed or what's important.

Appreciate any help :)

Just got mine finished this morning. I didn't want to go cheap. I got ceramic tint. In NV, legal front of 35%, rear lower windows are 15% and my upper hatch window is 5%. Visibility was great on my drive home tonight too! It was others on this site that convinced me to make this decision! I'm very happy I did so!

I went with a little shop that uses 3M Tint. My fronts are 30%, the rears are 20%, and the hatch is 5%. I was kinda nervous about it being too dark but so far I've had no issue driving at night.

How dark really is the 20%? I've been reading state law and it allows you to have 35% on the drivers and passengers window, then 20% on anything behind the driver. The only thing I'm really worried about would be night time driving I suppose

I have 20 on my fronts and 15 on the other windows.. That's the darkest allowed in Texas.. It's a brand called lumar, I believe it's a high quality tint if I remember.. Honestly on my past car the windows were super dark and it was bad tint so at night you could barely see out.. No lie I had to roll my windows down while parking or turning to make sure I didn't hit anything.. But these windows are just as dark except I can see very clearly out.. It's almost like a 2 way mirror, it's dark looking into the car but easier to see out.. Hope this helps..

I have 35% on the front windows and 5% on all of the back windows. It is dark at night, but you adjust to it after a while. You just need to be a bit careful at first.

The tint definitely helps keep the car cooler on hot days, especially with a sun shade up. It can still heat up inside, but everything is not hot to the touch.

That's exactly how my tint is. It looks amazing from outside the car, nice and dark, and inside the car you would not even be able tell that it was 20%. The visibilty is perfect even at night.

Eighty percent of heat in a conventional car comes from the roof, so if you want a cool car then forget about tinting and go for white or battleship or something like that. Except the Veloster turbo has a glass roof. Increasing the side and rear window tinting beyond stock has no impact on interior heat whatsoever and would only be done for style. When I managed a fleet until recently I got rid of the standard order process of tinted windows because I knew it had no difference to interior temperature, it cost money for no tangible benefit and it degraded visibility on dull and overcast days. Needless to say my Veloster has no additional tinting over stock, which is quite dark enough.

Thanks for those pics. It actually does look really nice! I guess I was just worried about the 20% and night driving, but those images have made me much more comfortable (obviously they're day so it's different but also I won't be tinting as dark as you have). Now just have to get the damn thing first so I can get to working on it! :D

Tinting my windows made a hell of a difference to the heat. My car is Storm Trooper white (Elite white in the US I believe) and parking in the sun all day, I would gag getting into the car from the heat. The rear hatch window especially, that was a shocker for heat. Couldnt touch it on the inside after a day in full sun. Anyway, I got 35% done all round, that cut the heat but wasn't anywhere near dark enough, so had the car done again. Had 20% put on the front windows, and 10% put on the back windows. I left the rear window where the wiper is at 35% for night visibility. Keep in mind I had this put over the 35% so it ended up quite dark. I then had the hatch roof glass done in 5%. Still didn't think it was dark enough so had another layer of 5% put on  now you can't see in, nor out of it but damn its nice and cool in the back now on a sunny day.

Night time side view

All these windows are easy to see out of at night time, I back into my garage at home in the dark and park the passenger side of the car 2 inches off the wall with no problems looking through this tint.

Here is a view of the hatch glass when it is open. See if you can tell the difference between 35% and two layers of 5%

That was the plan! I have been asked by a cop once when I was stopped at an RBT (Roadside breath test) about how dark they were, and I just said it was privacy glass in the back. He told me it looked nice and sent me on my way. So long as the front is slightly lighter than the back I find the cops won't give me any grief over it :saint:

Hey rpmm,

Where in San Diego did you get your tints installed at? Also how much did it cost? Thanks in advance!

I got it done at Oasis Trade Window Tinting in Miramar. The dealership put light tint on the back windows, but I wanted something darker. So to remove the old tint and install new tint on 7 windows (including the sunroof), it was about 250. I did have Groupon for tint on 5 windows.

You can get the sunroof tinted? The guy that did mine said it was a liability and may cause it to shatter.
